“Nope,” I replied, not even bothering to look at him.

He would’ve been able to see the stars in my eyes that were quickly being replaced with disappointment from being nearly caught.

I stepped into my sandals as Zach pulled on a pair of sneakers. He opened the door, and I slipped under his arm and out into the muggy late August evening.

Zach rested his hand against my back, guiding me down the front steps and to my car. I unlocked the doors and figured he would reach forward and open it, but he didn’t.

I glanced over at him, and he was annoyed. No wait—pissed.

“I’m sorry,” he muttered through gritted teeth. “For…doing that to you on the couch. You deserve better than that.”

I reached up and placed my hand on his cheek, my heart flopping around in my chest as he closed his eyes and leaned into my touch. “It’s okay. Seriously.”

“He almost saw you. That’s not okay.”

I tried not to smile. “I think he would’ve seenyou.” Deciding to be brave, I cupped his cock over his jeans, feeling it grow. “I would’ve been fully hidden by…it.”

Zach backed me up against my car, his hands rough and roaming, and kissed me hard.

God, I wanted more. I wanted so much more.

Our kiss slowed, and we parted. Zach opened my car door and leaned in to kiss me again once I was settled.

“I like you, Jessa. Just so you don’t spend the next few days inside your head wondering how I feel.”

“Oh, wow,” I began. “That’s good to know. Glad I’m not in this confusingly wild attraction alone.”

“Hell no. I fell first. And I’m still falling.”

I smiled. “I think you’ll land on your feet.”

CHAPTER18

ZACH

I sentJessa every single advertisement I saw for our pre-season game in support of Power Play. She responded to each with a heart eyes emoji, and I would stare down at that small yellow face, unsure what to say in return.

So…I wouldn’t say anything. I just sent pictures of social media posts and electronic billboards.

She was busy, and even though she attended all of my practices, she was usually gone before I was finished.

“RENSHAW!”

I had stopped skating and was staring at the woman in the stands who was on the phone. Shit. I was so obsessed with just…lookingat her that I couldn’t focus on anything.

“MOVE YOUR ASS!” Coach Wilkens doubled down.

I pushed forward, trying to figure out what the hell I was even supposed to be doing.

Our practices had shifted from skill development to something that resembled the training we’d done for the Calder Cup playoffs two years ago. Coach was pushing us harder, and I guessed I was to blame for that.

Some of my teammates weren’t stoked about the pre-season games. Others, who were more interested in puck bunnies, were thrilled they’d get to debut sooner.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Coach Wilkens demanded once I neared the bench. “Renshaw!”

I finally drew my gaze to him, and I didn’t have an answer. This game was a big damn deal, but I couldn’t get my head out of the clouds.

She was the only thing I could think of.
