We had Zach’s…

“Uh, yeah. I have a new one.”

Andrew nodded. “Write it down and bring that.”

Our success stories were always anonymous, and I’d make sure to remove any pieces that could connect the story to Zach.

“Alright. Well, you might want to letsomeoneknow that you won’t be at their practice on Thursday…”

“Go away,” I hissed.

Andrew laughed and gripped the arm of the chair, standing slowly while groaning to emphasize how he was much older, therefore wiser, than me.

He had barely passed through the threshold to my office when I grabbed my phone and navigated to my recent calls. I pressed Zach’s name and brought the phone to my ear.

It only rang twice before he picked up.

“Hello?”

God, even hisvoicemade my stomach flop around. “Hi.”

“My lucky charm,” he mused. “How are you?”

“Not bad…and you?”

“As usual, my day instantly gets better when I hear your voice. Now, even though I know you’re totally smitten with me…” He paused, allowing me a moment to interject with a snort. “I’d love to know the reason you called. Seeing your name pop up on my phone makes me as excited as it does worried.”

“No need to worry. I just wanted to say thank you.”

“Oh, yeah? What did you want to thank me for this time? Is it my dashing good looks, perhaps? My charming nature? Please tell me, lucky. I can’t take not knowing any longer.”

“For helping Power Play. I have good news and bad news.”

“Bad news first,” he blurted.

“I can’t come to practice on Thursday.”

“Oh…” The sadness in his voice made my heart ache. “Why not?”

“Because we have a meeting at ten-thirty with the Hammerhead Foundation about the pre-season game.”

“Oh! That’s great! I’ll let you off the hook this time, but it’s going to cost you…”

Excitement blazed through me, warming my skin all over. “Is that so?”

“Yep. To make up for missing my practice, you’re going to have to come to my place. I think you know the address. I want to make you dinner. I’m taking meal requests, but the day and time are set. Friday at seven. What do you say, lucky?”

I couldn’t contain my cheeky grin. “Hmm, let me check my calendar. I’m sobusythese days…” I teased, but I knew I wasn’t fooling Zach. “Yes, Zachy.”

“I could get used to you saying that, you know.”

That heat burned lower, flickering across areas I wanted to feel Zach’s hands, mouth, and…

“Now, now, Mr. Renshaw. Keep your mind out of the gutter.”

“It’spermanentlyin the gutter when I’m around you, Jessa,” he admitted, his words a breathy declaration that he thought of me the same way I thought of him.

“Bye, Zachy,” I called, fanning at myself in a weak attempt to quell my rising temperature.
