“Hi,” Jessa echoed. “You played really well.”

“My lucky charm was here.”

“If leaving work early to come and freeze my tits off here makes you play better, I’ll happily be your good luck charm.”

“You already are.”

I could have stayed here all day staring at her, but I knew the guys would soon leave the dressing room and would taunt me relentlessly. I didn’t want Jessa to get uncomfortable, because they could be crude as hell.

I cleared my throat. “Are you hungry?”

Jessa hiked her obviously heavy bag higher on her shoulder. “I could eat.”

“Give me that,” I murmured and grabbed her bag, ignoring her protests. “Great, because I’m starving.”

“Worked up an appetite by carrying the team, huh?” She turned, moving toward the doors.

I fell into step with her, trying to match her gait so I wasn’t miles ahead of her with her short legs. “So youwerewatching and not just working.”

I knew she was blushing without having to look at her. “Maybe.”

We stepped out into the humid summer air, a stark contrast from the chilly arena. I kept moving, and although Jessa followed, she slowed.

“I need my keys.”

“I’ll drive,” I stated firmly.

I wasn’t offering. I unlocked my doors and tossed Jessa’s bag onto the backseat. I opened the passenger door, and Jessa hesitated.

“Please get in,” I coaxed.

“Only because you saidplease,” Jessa grumbled and stepped forward, sliding into the seat.

I pressed the door closed and rounded the hood, breathing a laugh as I watched Jessa admire the inside of my car. I got behind the wheel and started the car, turning down the volume before my speakers could begin blaring out my pump-up music that I had listened to on the way to the arena this afternoon.

“Air conditioning,” Jessa mused and placed her hands in front of the vents. “Vital for the summer.”

“Please tell me you have air conditioning in your car, Jessa,” I groaned.

She didn’t look at me. She drummed her fingers along her knees and stared straight ahead.

“Jessa…” I began.

“It just needs to be recharged, or whatever. That’s what the internet says.”

She rolled her eyes toward me, and even though she looked annoyed, she was trying her best to hold back a grin. She liked the fact that I was concerned about her driving that crappy car. She wouldn’t be willing to accept the help had I offered, but she accepted theideaof help.

“What would you like to eat?” I asked, shifting until I could gaze at her fully.

Jessa’s back was pressed against the passenger door. She didn’t have her seatbelt on yet, and I wanted to believe that she had her full attention on me. That she wanted to talk. But I couldn’t help but wonder if she was uncomfortable and was trying to put as much distance between us as possible.

I must have been frowning, because she started frowning and leaned forward, resting her elbows on the center console.

“I’m not the one who’s worked up an appetite, now, am I?”

Jessa brought her chin to her fist while her other hand laid across the console, her fingertips brushing against my thigh. She didn’t yank her hand away like I expected her to. Instead, she brushed those fingers back and forth idly.

“I could eat anything,” I said slowly, carefully choosing my words.
