I knew I was blushing, but I forced a scoff. “Yeah, yeah.”

“No, I mean it.” He sat up, and I greedily watched the flex of the firm muscles along his arm. “Wanted to run something by you.”

“I don’t like the sound of that.”

Another melodic laugh from the dangerously handsome man on the other end of the call. “I think you will. I realized I didn’t tell you about my plan for the Hammerheads to raise money for Power Play.”

“Go on,” I prompted once he paused.

A smile stretched wide. “See? Told you you’d like it.”

“Get to the good stuff.”

Zach raised a brow. “Now, now, lucky. Keep your mind out of the gutter.” He lifted a hand to cover his nipples, and he grinned when I laughed. “I’m thinking a pre-season game. All ticket sales go to Power Play. I’m sure there’s more we can do, but I think if we start there, we can raise enough to get you through the season.”

I closed my eyes and blew out a steady breath. When I looked back at him, Zach wore an expression heavy with concern.

“Thank you,” I said, and he cracked a soft smile.

“It’s going to cost you, though.”

His words made me squeeze my legs together, trying to quell the flare of heat between them.

“Oh, yeah?” I propped my phone against the cup that held my pens.

I lifted an elbow up and rested my head in my hands, knowing damn well Zach could see the way this sapphire dress accentuated my cleavage.

“Fuck,” he hissed softly, then cleared his throat. “Come to my practice tomorrow and let me take you to dinner.”

“Hmm, I don’t know,” I teased.

Zach frowned.

“Don’t look so disappointed. I’ll come to your practice, and I guess there’s no harm in eating food next to each other. What time is your practice?”

“Two-thirty.”

“Making me leave work early?”

“It’s alright. I know your boss.”

I laughed. “I’ll see you at two-thirty tomorrow. I’m bringing my laptop so I can work while you skate circles around your teammates.”

“I think you’ll find the practice far more interesting than work, lucky. But you can try.”

“See you tomorrow,” I repeated.

“Tomorrow, lucky.”

“Tomorrow.”

CHAPTER13

ZACH

Jessa wasn’t here.She hadn’t come.

My stomach flopped around as I skated laps and kept peeking into the stands for her. I tossed a glance at the scoreboard, frowning when I saw it was almost three.
