“Mom! Don’t be so nosy.”

She glanced over her shoulder and our eyes met for a brief second before she looked away. She looked flustered.

“I told you, I don’t want to jinx anything. Maybe you can meet him if we make it to the six-month mark.”

She kicked at the pavement with her boot. “Has it been six months already? Are you sure? Wow, time flies, I guess.”

I heard her sigh at least once as her mother launched into a long diatribe in response.

Finally, she replied, “Well, we’ll see Mom. You know, his schedule is always so busy. There’s no way he’d be able to take enough time off to fly out to Kentucky right now. Maybe this summer would be better?”

Her body language was tense as she listened to her mother again.

She sounded like she cut her mom off. “No. No, he’s really good to me. He makes plenty of time for me, Mom. He’s so sweet.”

She lowered her voice so I could barely hear what she said next. “Yes, he’s right here with me now. We’re getting coffee.”

I looked around. I hadn’t seen her with anyone this whole time.

“Just down the street from my apartment.”

Hmmm. Was she telling tall tales to her mother?

“No, I told you; he’s just shy about taking pictures.”

She stole a quick peek at me again. Sorry, lassie, this was good. I was listening.

“Argh. Yes, he’s tall. About six foot two.”

Another big sigh escaped from her pretty lips.

“Well, let’s see. Light brown hair — a little on the longish side. Brown eyes.”

Shite, so far, she could practically be describing me.

“Yes, he’s fit and muscly.”

Now I knew she must be describing me.

Her nervous giggle was so feminine. “Yes, Mom. You’d definitely consider him ‘eye candy’.”

Her eyes flicked back to mine again briefly before skittering away. I couldn’t help the smug smile that spread across my face.

She was so engrossed in her phone conversation that she didn’t see the woman barreling down the sidewalk, making a beeline straight for her. I’d felt the woman’s eyes latch onto me from afar as she approached. The woman was blatantly looking me over while she spoke on the cell phone that was clutched against her ear. At first, I thought she might have recognized me from the band, but as she approached, it dawned on me that she was an older version of the feisty lass standing right next to me. The wee lassie was in for a big surprise.

I had a feeling that this was going to be highly entertaining.

Chapter 2

Summer

IcringedasIdescribed my fake boyfriend to my mother. Dammit, I was shit under pressure and I might have just described the annoyingly sexy guy behind me in line at the coffee shop. I didn’t mean to, but I took a quick peek at him. Yep. I’d described him to a T, including his delicious muscular physique. If I had met this guy in my sorority days, I’d have been thinking about dropping my panties for him; however, these were my ‘I hate men’ days, so sex was the last thing on my mind.

Who was I kidding? The guy was insanely hot. Sizzling. He oozed sex appeal. And if sex wasn’t on my mind, why were my panties so wet right now?

I sighed. He was just the kind of guy I didn’t need in my life. Didn’t need and most definitely didn’t want. My mom was still babbling on the phone with me about how much she wanted to meet my fake boyfriend. It was getting harder and harder to put it off. My lies were getting more preposterous every time I talked to her. He’s really shy about getting his picture taken.Yes, I knew it was time to break up with my pretend boyfriend. He’d been a great buffer from my over-eager mom while it lasted.

My eyes swept over to the Irish guy in line behind me. Did I mention that he had an absolutely panty-meltingly sensual Irish accent? If I could just ignore the dumb stuff that came out of his mouth — he’d called me Lassie the dog, for God’s sake — I’d be in heaven just listening to him talk. Now, if he’d only whispered some dirty things in my ear…
