Matteo runs his fingers through his hair. “I don’t know. Listen, don’t go anywhere else by yourself, you hear?”

“Uh…”

Matteo pins me under his stare. “I’m serious, Brittney. I may have my own reasons to get revenge on Hawk, twisted or not, but I’d never hurt you…physically,” he adds.

“And Rocco would?” I ask.

“In a heartbeat,” Matteo answers.

“Does he know there’s a chance he’s Ethan’s father?” I ask.

“Not that I know of. He was in the dark as much as anyone about what Ellie and Dad have done,” he says, admitting he didn’t know about Ethan either.

“So, get his DNA somehow, Matteo. We all need to know who Ethan’s father is, but no one more than Ethan. Think about him,” I plead.

“And if he is, there’s no way I’d let him anywhere near my innocent nephew,” he almost growls.

I put my hand on his arm. “I understand you wanting to protect him. But what if knowing he has a son, he has someone to live for could change him for the better? What if all these liesyour sistertold twisted him up as much as everyone else? I know you don’t want to believe it, but it’s the facts. She’s the reason so many lives are now tangled in this mess. What if finding out he has a son saves him?” I ask.

“You don’t know the De Lucas. They have no morals. They only care about money and power. His little brother, Leo, is the only decent one out of them,” he says.

“Okay. I’m just saying, everyone needs someone. You shouldn’t be the one to judge who deserves a chance to be a father,” I say softly.

He brushes his fingers against my cheek. “Why are you such a good person, Brittney? Hasn’t anyone broken your heart and jaded you before?”

“Yes, more than you know. My own sister,” I admit as a tear falls. “That’s why I can say to you that you may not know your sister like you think you do. She may not deserve the faith you’ve put in her,” I tell him.

He swipes my tear away and kisses my forehead. “Leave. And drive straight home,” he says.

“Will you get his DNA, Matteo? And at least think about what I said?”

He nods. “I promise. And like I told you before, I don’t break my promises. But just because I think about it doesn’t mean I’m going to change my mind,” he reminds me.

“All I can ask is you think it over,” I tell him before I shut my car door.

The night at Midnight Kiss with Brittney was amazing. But it seems she’s been distant since then, and I don’t know why. I don’t know if it’s because we’re supposed to get the DNA tests back today or what. Everyone has been rather distant to Brittney except Wren.

And Hart—he’s objective, here to do his job, but it seems my entire family has pulled away from Brittney. I have no clue why, even Mamma.

The fight is tomorrow. It’s finally here. It’ll be at eight tomorrow night. Brittney was in the gym watching me train until my mother came in. She left and Mamma didn’t even glance her way, but Wren shook her head and said a few words to Mamma before leaving too.

Hart and Vincent notice and take a few minutes to get a drink of water as Mamma moves closer. I squirt some water in my mouth from my bottle and wipe my face with a towel. “What’s going on, Mamma?” I ask and then glance at Vincent.

“All of you have been acting cold to Brittney since the other night and I have no idea why,” I say.

Hart stares down at the mat and Vincent exchanges a glance with Mamma.

“Start talking now,” I demand.

“We don’t want to distract you from the fight tomorrow night, Hawk,” Mamma says.

“It’s too late for that. You’re all about as subtle as a bull in a china shop. What’s going on?” I ask again.

“She went to see Matteo the other night,” Vincent speaks up.

“Who, Brittney?” I ask, stunned.

“Yes, I caught her as she was leaving,” he says.
