Mr. Thorpe starts loading up his briefcase with documents. "He was involved, but he got the company owner involved too, a Mr. Benson. Apparently, after some investigation, he managed to convince the owner that ifyouwere out of the picture, they could swoop in and re-sign Charlie Morton. But it took far longer than anticipated, and they just got to you now."

"Who did Mr. Benson know?" I ask.

"The State Governor of California. I don’t even want to speculate about the favors each might owe the other, but whatever is between them was enough to have the state governor put pressure on the police to make an arrest. The one thing we don’t know yet is if the arrest was meant to coincide with the festival or not."

I shake my head. "No, it would not have been. It has generated too much publicity in the last forty-eight hours."

My lawyer closes his briefcase and presses the clasps into place. "I’m sorry I couldn’t get you out of here sooner than that, but it was all they had. They don’t have a leg to stand on, so they save face by keeping you in for the full forty-eight hours even though they know they couldn’t charge you with anything."

"Do not worry about it. At least I know this is over now, and I can get on with the rest of my life. I have been hanging on to this secret for years, and I knew there might be consequences, but they have been dealt with. So, can I walk out of here?"

"You are free to leave as of one minute ago. Enjoy your freedom, Mr. McDonagh."

"Thank you." I hold out my hand, and my lawyer shakes it. "I am sure I will need you again, but I will try to stay out of trouble."

"Well, don’t stay out of too much trouble, or I will be out of a job."

I pat him on the back, and we rise to leave together. Some doors are buzzed, and we make it through to the main foyer of the police station. I expect there to be someone there to warn me that they are keeping an eye on me or something like that, but I may have watched too many movies.

"Oh, one thing I should tell you," says my lawyer. "You know that Miss Hudson has stuck around to wait for you, but the rest of the cast and crew who came out here have too. They wanted to show their support."

I smile as my lawyer opens the door for me, and the next part is very similar to how it is in the movies. I have been inside for the past two days, and I have to shield my eyes when some real light hits me. I hold a hand on my forehead and see a small group of actors and production crew waiting for me.

There is animated chatter as I walk out, and Teal runs up to me… or waddles very quickly up to me. I embrace her and suddenly feel that I have lost two days of my life. The forty-eight hours I was locked up is two days I will not get to spend with her.

"I have missed you," she whines.

"I have missed you too. There are only big, hairy guys to hug in there."

She hits me playfully on the chest. "Don’t say things like that."

"I could not think about anyone else the whole time I was there. I missed you so much. I love you, Teal."

"I love you too. Oh, my goodness! I can’t believe that happened."

Before I can respond, she pushes her lips to mine, and I find her hand coming around to my ass. She squeezes it, and I feel the nervous energy radiating from her. Since she hit the midway part of her pregnancy, she has been like a horny teenager, and I have no problems with that.

I do sometimes worry that I am going to give in fully to my lust and fuck her too hard, but I have managed to control myself so far.

Our tongues meet again, and I want to give in to my carnal desires, but I become painfully aware of the cast and crew watching us.

I pull apart from Teal and cough to clear my throat. I raise my arm to recognize everyone else there. "Hey, thank you all for coming!"

"It’s the best thing that could have happened!"

I don’t see him, but the enthusiastic and positive tone means it can only be Lopez.

I take Teal by the hand, and we walk to greet everyone. Lopez pops out of the crowd and gives me a big bear hug.

"Ah, it is good to see you, my friend." He drops me back to the ground.

"So?" I ask. "They loved it, right?"

"Longest applause for a TV show in Sundance history!" someone shouts.

"I still can’t believe it, man!" Lopez smiles. "I knew this thing was a beast, but I didn’t know how much people would appreciate it. And your arrest—that wasn’t a publicity stunt, was it?"

I shake my head. "I wish I had thought it up, but it was pure luck, good or bad. Is everyone talking about it?"
