Logan looks at me as if I can rectify the situation, but I am too stunned to speak. I watch as he leaves the room, scowling at me the entire time,

"Youbought him in here," accuses Mr. Hodgkins. "I would remind you to stick to your job and let me worry about the important things. Next time you have a bright idea, keep it to yourself."

"I'm sorry. I didn't th—"

"Think! No, you never do. You are lucky I have kept you around this long. Do you know how many people would kill for this job? You owe me for what I have done for you."

His tone of voice sends a chill running down my spine as if he will call in the favor someday.

"Should I continue to work with Charlie Morton or should I leave that to you?" I ask.

Usually, he has all the power in this relationship, but not with Charlie Morton out in the wild still.

"Just do your job, Teal."

"I need to go after him," I say.

"Stick your tits out and convince him that he's being an asshole."

I bite my tongue and get up from the chair, leaving the room as quickly as possible. I run down the hallway, hoping to head him off before he can get in the elevator.

"Hey!" I shout after Logan as he presses the button.

He turns around and glares at me. "I have never been so insulted in my life."

"Well, get used to it," I state petulantly. "I need to talk to you."

"Did your boss send you? Does he make you do all of his dirty work?"

I pull Logan into the closest empty room near the elevator and close the door behind us.

"Do you really think he was the only one in the wrong?" I ask. "The two of you were like ill-tempered children in there! He is most definitely an asshole, but so are you. Did you think you could come in and demand anything you wanted because you have money? Have you ever learned how to compromise in a business deal?"

"I will not compromise on this."

"Then you are a bigger idiot than I thought."

"What about you? Why did you not say anything? You are great at sweet-talking Charlie, but what about your boss? If you had given a little support, he might have caved."

"You spoke about wanting to work with me, but you don't want to work with me; you want to get everything for yourself, and you don't care whom you use to get that. I'm only part of this because I have a relationship with Charlie. If I didn't, you wouldn't have spoken to me after the meeting with her two weeks ago, and my boss would have fired me by now. The only good thing I have in my life right now is my time with her, and that's a fucking sham."

"You know what I am doing is right."

"I don't care, Logan. There are more important things than the rights to a book."

He looks at me and shakes his head slightly as if he can't believe I have just said that. I should run from him and never see him again, but he deserves to know.

"I…." The words won't come out. I go over to the window, looking out at the tops of the buildings. "I need to tell you something."

"Okay," he says patronizingly.

"I was late for the meeting because I was checking something."

"Okay," he repeats.

I go on even though I am becoming frustrated with him. "I was taking a test in the bathroom."

"O—"
