Clearing his throat, he murmurs, “It’s been a long time since my last relationship.”

“Why is that?”

Seriously, I need to shut my mouth.

He shrugs. “I haven’t met the right woman. I don’t see the point in starting something if you know it’s not going to go somewhere.”

“That makes sense.”

“How long were you with your son’s father?”

I should’ve seen this coming after enquiring about his personal life.

“We were on and off for about eight years. We weren’t together when he died.”

“It’s still a long time to be with someone. A lot of history.”

“It is,” I agree, hoping to leave it at that.

My history with Callum isn’t something I like to rehash. Not with anyone.

“What scares you?”

The question throws me a bit, but it’s easy to answer. “Being without my son. I can’t imagine my life without him.”

His eyes bore into mine, and the rest of the pub fades away. It’s how I imagine a fly feels when it’s trapped in a spider’s web. There’s a danger surrounding him, yet I’m not scared of him.

“What scares you?”

“Not much.”

I arch my brow. “There must be something.”

He gives a slight shake of his head. “After everything Lex and I have been through, and survived, there’s nothing that scares me.”

“It sounds sad when you put it like that.”

“It is what it is.”

I suddenly want to delve deeper into who this man really is.
