She nods but continues to search her phone.

“Don’t waste any more time looking for the email. And don’t spend more than an hour on anything else. Delegate whatever you can. Then get ready for tonight. We’re going to go to that cocktail party, and we’re going to charm the hell out of every fucking person in the room, until they’re begging us to carry our product.”

“Hey,” Lexie says as she enters in a sarong.

I can’t take my eyes off the knot that’s holding it up. A single knot between me and her sexy little body.

“Gray wants to talk to you,” she tells Valentina. “They’re sending up a party planner from Charleston who’s coordinated some big events for them. She’ll work with your person to sort things out. I can help too. I’m not as good at this as you, but I can take direction.”

Valentina couldn’t ask for a better friend than Lexie—and I couldn’t ask for a better partner.

Valentina nods, but she doesn’t move.

Lexie puts a hand on her shoulder. “Gray’s next door in your father’s office. You should go.”

I stand, hoping to prod her, and she finally gets up too.

“Thank you,” she whispers, eyeing me for a moment before giving me a heartfelt embrace.

Valentina and I have always been close. I knew eventually we’d move beyond the cold war. I’m just sorry that it had to happen like this.

“It’s all going to work out,” I assure her when she pulls away. “You’ll see.”

“I’ll be right there,” Lexie tells her as she leaves.

“What do you think happened?” she asks when her friend is gone.

There’s a bit of tang in her tone, and I’m sure she doesn’t buy the misunderstanding bullshit.

“I don’t know, but I’m sure as hell going to find out. Will you keep an eye on her?”

“I’m not planning to leave her side.”

I wrap my arms around her and pull her close, inhaling the sweet scent that is Lexie. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For being you.”

“You can thank me when it’s all done. I know exactly how, too.”

“You’re getting awfully cheeky, Angel,” I tease, fingering the knot on her sarong. “Don’t think just because we’re away, I won’t find a way to put you in your place.”

Her eyes glitter. “I look forward to it.”

Antonio clears his throat from the doorway, and Lexie jumps. “You two don’t have enough to do?”

“What exactly is it that you need?” I glare at him.

Lexie untangles herself from my hold and gives Antonio a small wave on her way out.

“What the fuck is going on?” he asks gruffly, parking himself at the edge of the desk.

“I have no idea.”
