She’s just like them. Son of a bitch.

I nod at Giana and call Tamar on my way out.

“Sorin,” she says, like it’s not two a.m.

“I need you to do something.”

“Name it.”

“We still have a copy of Alexis Clarke’s passport?”

“A few copies.”

“Make a list of everywhere she’s traveled in the last two years, with dates, and then make a list of every city where a woman has been abducted—only abductions where we think the traffickers have been involved. I need those dates as well. Send me the lists as soon as possible.”

“Depending on the country, Alexis might not have been subject to the same standards that someone flying commercially would have had to adhere to.”

“I don’t know how often she flies commercially.” The answer would be never, if she wasn’t sneaking around behind her father’s back. “But unless she’s with her father, I doubt she’s able to skirt immigration control. It’s not so easy.”

“Is there anything else I should know?”

“No. Just get me the information as soon as possible.”

I hope to hell I’m wrong, but either way, I need to know. Not just because she’s under my protection now, but because I’m not spending another night with a woman who has no regard for her safety.

I’m going to string you up by your fingernails, Lexie. An hour for every match I find. And it won’t end in an orgasm.

ALEXIS

My father’s assistant contacted me this morning to let me know Dad was on his way to Porto to take me to Sunday lunch. I’ve been giving myself stand your ground pep talks since then.

I’m not going back to London with him, but I love my father and don’t want this to turn into something we can’t walk back from. The whole thing has me jittery.

His visit isn’t exactly a surprise. Rafael told me he was coming. I should be annoyed that he didn’t bother to ask if I was free to meet him today, but I’ve been too busy being anxious that this is just a ruse to get me home.

Rafael wouldn’t conspire with him against me—not at this point. And he’d tell me if there was any hint that my father was up to something. Well, maybe he wouldn’t tell me, but he wouldn’t lie.

I glance at my outfit in the mirror and grimace. I’ve already changed my clothes three times to have lunch with a man who doesn’t care what I wear as long as my ass and breasts are covered.

As the moment gets closer, I’m practically jumping out of my skin. I wish Rafael was here, but he’s been stealing time here and there to spend with me, and today he’s paying the piper. Still, I need some assurance from him, and I don’t care if it seems needy.

Lexie: I want your word that my father isn’t here to take me back to London.

Rafael: I don’t think your father is coming to take you to London.

Not very assuring, Rafa.

Lexie: You don’t think?! You’re going to have to do better than that, Huntsman.

Rafael: I can only give you my word about things I control. I don’t control your father.

Still not reassuring.

Lexie: I’m worried.

Could I be any more pathetic? Although, Rafael knows my father. Almost anyone who meets with him is either anxious, terrified, or a fool.
