“You had sex with Rafael the night of my wedding and I’m just hearing about it?”

“No sex. Just other stuff.”

“Ew,” she says like a seagull shit on her. “I don’t need the details. Maybe just the broad strokes.”

“There’s really nothing more to tell.”

“You moved in with him and there’s nothing to tell?”

“Don’t make too much of it. I’m not.” Liar. “I know how you feel about Rafael and me—together. I love you, and I hope this doesn’t change anything between us.”

“Oh, Lexie. Nothing will change.”

I know it’s easy for her to say right now, but I hold on tight, because it’s just what I need to hear.

“You and Rafael,” she continues, “I love you both with all my heart. There’s nothing that would make me happier than seeing you happy together. But whatever happens, I’m on your side—always. Count on it.”

Valentina doesn’t say it, but she doesn’t see a happy ending for me—not with him. Maybe she’s right. I don’t know. But I have no doubt if it ends—when it ends—she’ll be there for me with a bottle of cabernet and a box of tissues, and she won’t leave my side until she’s convinced I’m okay.

“Let’s finish this conversation tomorrow,” she says, seeming a bit preoccupied. “I haven’t been able to reach Marco all evening. I want to let him know I’m on my home so he doesn’t worry.”

When we hang up, I pour myself a glass of wine. Telling Valentina about Rafael wasn’t as difficult as I anticipated. Still, I’m relieved it’s behind me.

Now to prepare for my late-night snack.

RAFAEL

After being waylaid by Noelia, who was waiting for me when I left the conference room, I’m finally on my way up to find my angel. Today has been a brutal motherfucker. I need her in the worst way.

I haven’t heard a word from Lexie all evening, but the guard, stationed at the elevator upstairs, texted Zé after they finished moving her into my apartment. Zé didn’t utter a negative peep when he relayed the message to me, but I’m sure he’s not happy about my new roommate. Too fucking bad.

When I enter the foyer, soft jazz filters through the apartment. Lexie is nowhere to be seen, but dozens of lit votives flank a path to the bedroom.

Someone gave her a heads-up that I was on my way. I should be annoyed, but as I follow the flickering light into the bedroom, I want to give them a nice fat bonus, instead.

“I see you’ve made yourself at home,” I say to the beautiful woman whose back is propped against the headboard of my bed. Her hair’s down, and she’s wearing a flimsy nightgown with thin straps that’s not long for her body.

She smiles. It’s a seductive smile that goes straight to my cock. “A girl’s got to do something to stay out of trouble.”

Her eyes skim my body brazenly while I tug off my clothes. She’s a handful, but tonight I’m not in the mood to cut her any slack. If she starts, she’s going to get more than she bargained for.

“It’s been a hell of a day,” I mutter, straddling her thighs. “I’m impatient and edgy, and I need you, Angel. Need you in a way that you’ve never experienced.” I kiss her and nip her bottom lip before pulling back. “If it gets to be too much, you have to stop me.”

With demons clawing at my chest, I tear the nightgown from her body and latch onto her nipple before she can form a single word.

“Rafa,” she whispers. “What’s wrong?” Her voice is wobbly, and her apprehension makes my cock harder and thicker.

“Are you afraid?” I taunt.

She shakes her head. “No. Not really.”

Despite what she claims, I think she is a little afraid, and because I’m not a good man, it sends a jolt of adrenaline surging through me.

“It’s just that this is different. You’re different,” she adds, her brow furrowed, as she searches my face for answers.

“I’ve been careful with you, up until now. I wanted to ease you in, not scare you away from sex. I don’t have it in me tonight to be careful. You should stop me if that’s what you want.”
