I toss him a quick message.

“Ter-Ter. Anxiously awaiting results of investor discussion. Call me?”

His reply just about knocks me off my feet.

“Heading out with Kasia now. Call you later.”

KASIA.

My head might explode. Kasia? How could she have swooped in like that, like a conniving pigeon who pushed all the little brown birds aside in her quest for the crumbs?

Kasia. Man, oh, man. Why didn’t I say something? Why didn’t I stop this from happening when I had the chance?

Oh yeah, because I was trying to bare my heart to Terence, and it wasn’t going well. That’s when she walked in with her pretty little button nose and long brown hair and almost forced Terence into a date with her.

Then again, Terence is a grown man. He could have turned her down if he’d wanted to. And he didn’t.

Am I supposed to just sit here, twiddling my thumbs while the man—my best friend in the whole wide world—is dating the wrong woman?

But how do I tell him that it’s me… I’m the right woman for him.

I sure hope better words come to mind, because that’s it. I’m going to find him.

There are several advantages to living in a relatively small town, starting with the fact that when you’re looking for the love of your life, there are few places he could be.

I start with the usual haunts.

I Heart Burger… not there.

Maybe the Italian place? It’s a bigger restaurant that requires I make a cover story for going in. “Just looking for someone” is my choice, since the waiters here know me and know my family and know Terence, and I don’t want them to know I’m looking for him.

But they aren’t here.

The taco place just off Main Street? That’s the best bet. I should have thought of that sooner.

Not there either, which is a surprise because I happen to know that tacos are Terence’s favorite first date food. I find that incredibly ironic, given that they are among the messiest first date food you can have. I wouldn’t be caught dead having tacos on a first date when I wanted to have a second date…

Hmmm.

Am I figuring out something more of Terence’s psyche here?

Why is it that Terence barely ever sees a girl more than once? They go for tacos, then maybe to the dog park, and then the girl is either swiftly friend-zoned or completely eradicated from social existence…

The ice cream stand. Of course. Kasia said something about picking a place where Terence could bring Ranger. The ice cream stand is right by the dog park.

I’ve got to hand it to Kasia, she’s a savvy one. She completely dodged the trappings of the taco.

Now to act cool. Like I’m just going for a stroll. La-dee-da, strolling through the city center, this is what I do on a Wednesday evening. Completely natural that I’d be alone and headed for the dog park while dogless. Just another Wednesday evening, after all.

And there they are.

Standing in the far corner of the dog park, Terence has his hands in his pockets while Kasia twirls her hair.

I know this position. The woman has set her target, and in this case, that target is Terence. She uses the delight of the animal as bait, suggesting a dog park. And then she turns up the charm.

At least, I assume so, since I’m too far to hear what they are saying. I have to stay incognito, hidden from their line of sight, silent as a ninja in the–

“Alli?”
