“Train like you’re gonna fight.”

Her smile forced the corners of my lips to tug up too.

“You say the funniest things,” she said.

“I didn’t think that was particularly funny. But whatever you say.”

“I’m glad we know who’s in charge.”

I laughed at that one. “Tell yourself that if you want.”

“How about we both be in charge?”

“In here? Nah. I think I’ll take the lead.”

“Fine.” She pretended to acquiesce even though I knew Zoe liked that idea plenty. “Back to my question.”

“Back to your question,” I agreed.

“What is our status?” she blurted out.

“Status?”

“Yes. Status.”

I wasn’t following. “I dunno know what you mean.”

“Seriously?”

I shrugged.

“You really have been off the grid a long time. Relationship status.”

Ah, shit. “For real?”

“Yes, for real.”

“Zoe,” I said, understanding the reason for her obvious nervousness now. “If you think we are anything but boyfriend and girlfriend, then you probably need a religious intervention of some sort.”

She laughed. “You are a nut.”

I couldn’t believe she was asking me this. “I thought our status was just assumed.”

“You did say assumptions could be dangerous.”

“Touché.”

“So, I just wanted to clarify.”

“Clarification accomplished. Unless you want something else for us?”

She quickly dismissed that. “No, no. That’s perfect. I want that.”

“Good. As do I.”

And then didn’t the little minx go and bite her lip.

On purpose.
