A few hours after that, another.

Talked to Lucas. Seems like you may have gone dark. Have to admit, I thought maybe I was being ghosted.

I hadn’t even thought of Lucas but was glad she’d talked to him. Which meant he knew we were still in contact. Not that I was hiding anything, but I hadn’t talked to him in a few days.

Indeed

I messaged her now, lying down on my bed. While I waited for her to respond, I cleared out my other messages and thought of how often scenes of her on that couch had played through my mind during the last day.

I’d half expected her to tell me to fuck off, even if she had given me the green light. Instead, she’d done just the opposite. To say I was intrigued was an understatement.

Glad you’re safe.

Alive and well. How you doin’?

Working. Quiet day yesterday, just some cleaning, gym, and brunch with the girls.

That seems to be a common theme, gym and wine.

Indeed

Smiling at her use of my own phrase, I asked her what was on the agenda for the week.

Biding my time until New Orleans.

That’s right. Leaving Thursday, yes?

After work. I still can’t believe we’re going for the weekend.

I didn’t think I’d asked her before.

What’s the occasion?

Silence.

Usually, once Zoe got on a roll, she texted back pretty quickly. Maybe someone had come into her office. Or she was in a meeting.

Finally, text bubbles.

Last minute girls’ trip.

Should be fun.

Are you kidding? It’s New Orleans. Always a good time. It’s my number one favorite city ever.

No greater city in the world, huh?

Well, I wouldn’t say that. But I haven’t traveled outside the US, so I couldn’t say.

No?

Nope

I nearly said “we’ll have to remedy that” but held off. We weren’t there yet. But the fact was, I wanted to be. I couldn’t even remember talking to someone so easily as I did Zoe.

Florence may take that honor for me. Or maybe Paris.
