“Well, look who it is!” Owen’s voice startled me, and I nearly dropped the empty glass I was holding.

Jesus. I need to get it together.

But as I watched Owen trot forward, embracing Olivia, guilt-fueled bile shot up the back of my throat. My best friend had no idea that I was so hung up over his little sister—and that I had slept with her twice. In all the years that we had been close, I had never kept secrets from him. The guy knew everything about me, and while that was great...

It was for that very reason, I was almost one-hundred-percent certain he wouldn’t want me with his sister.

“Hey, boss,” Zena greeted me as the three approached. Her red hair was pulled back in a sleek ponytail, showing off her square chin and thin lips. “Fancy seeing you here.”

“Weird to see you at a party like this,” I joked, giving her a smirk. “I guess that’s what happens when you mix work with personal life.” I eyed Olivia, who was still focused on Owen, smiling at him. “Hey, Olivia,” I greeted her, hoping to catch a glimpse of those pale blue eyes.

“Hey, Eli.” She glanced over at me, her eyes barely catching mine for a second before turning back to Owen.

Well, alright then.

Ever since the office sex, she had been avoiding me—I think, anyway. It was hard to tell who was avoiding who. She had been emotionally charged after sex that day, and it had sent me hightailing away from her. I already knew that I didn’t want to get involved...

Or did I?

Because now, the woman was literally all I thought about, and it was so much more than just sex. It was the dimple in her lower cheek, and the way she laughed at her own dorky jokes. She was just...perfect in her own way.

And that was something I had never felt about anyone before.

“I’m glad you’ve made a good friend,” Owen said to Olivia before nodding to Zena.

“She’s the best friend I’ve been searching for my whole life.” Zena beamed, threading her arm around Olivia’s and invoking all sorts of jealous feelings from me. Anyone who touched Olivia burned me, and I was certain it was solely because I wasn’t fucking supposed to.

“Soulmates,” Olivia giggled, nudging Zena. “But really. I don’t know how I would’ve adjusted without her. How does it feel to know that you’re only a year away from being thirty-five?”

“I feel fucking old,” Owen grunted in response, looking over to me. “I’m the oldest one out of all of us, and I swear, I’m starting to feel it more and more these days. I wake up with back and neck pain more often than not—Katie is seriously buying me an orthopedic pillow for my birthday. That is how old I am.”

“Well, it could be worse,” I chuckled, slapping his shoulder. “She could be buying you a walker.”

“Ha ha.” Owen rolled his eyes.

“Anyway, we’ll catch up with you later,” Olivia said to Owen, reaching out and squeezing his arm. “I can’t wait to catch up with Katie.”

“Yeah, for sure.” Owen nodded to her as the two of them turned, heading off to the bathroom. I watched Olivia as she walked away, her heels accentuating her peachy ass.

Man, I’d like to fuck her from this angle.

My dick came to life at the idea of her ass bouncing against my abdomen, her pussy bearing down on my cock.

Stop it.

I cleared my throat, turning back to Owen. “This is gonna be a hell of a party. I invited anyone that would accept.”

“You always do that,” Owen chuckled, shaking his head. He let out a sigh before meeting my gaze. “Tell me what’s going on, man.”

“Dude. There is nothing going on,” I said exasperatedly, just as the bartender sat a new drink down beside me. “I don’t know how else to tell you that.”

“Oh come on, Eli. I can tell when you’re lying to me—and you’re definitely lying. Just tell me what’s on your mind.”

Fuck!

“Fine,” I snapped. “Do you really want to know? Because it’s your birthday, and this is just gonna ruin your night before it ever even gets started.”

“Yes, just tell me.” He rolled his eyes. “It can’t be anything worse than what happened at the circus in Rome.”
