‘Good, we’ll send him glitter and a bag of dicks. A dick for a dick.’

‘Dick for dick!’ Spike screams.

Laney laughs. ‘I just love you, Spike.’

He giggles a proper giggle that makes me laugh whenever I hear it.

‘Spike like pretty lady,’ he says to Laney when she gets close. ‘Woo-wooh,’ he whistles, now reacting to her saying his name.

They bump nose to beak, their usual greeting before he squawks again. ‘Pretty lady. Pretty lady!’ He’s dancing around the top of his cage, doing the weird feather ruffle when he sees ‘pretty ladies’.

‘I’m going to call him,’ I say, lifting my phone.

When I pull up his contact, I hesitate. Damn it. He is cute, but no. What we have isn’t love. It was just a fling. You don’t marry flings. I jab the FaceTime button.

‘Go over there!’ I command, waving Laney to my kitchen. ‘Spike.’ I pat my shoulder, and he wastes no time hopping over. He bounces around as I wait for Conner to answer, and when he does, he smiles, but his eyes aren’t on me.

‘Spike!’ he says, happy to greet my pet bird before the girl he supposedly loves.

‘Fuck off!’ Spike screams with perfect timing.

Conner’s jaw drops, and the smirk on my face couldn’t be more opposite of what I’m seeing in Conner. He looks offended that Spike just said what he said. Well, that’s going to make the rest of this really hurt, then.

‘Sorry,’ I apologize, then notice Laney waving her hands like a maniac.

‘You’re sorry?’ she whispers. ‘Why?’

Right. Why am I sorry? ‘No, you know what, Conner, I’m not sorry. Spike took the words right out of my mouth.’

‘What?’

‘This call is not to chit-chat about our day. Truthfully, I don’t want to know anything about your days ever again.’

Conner bites his lips together, dropping his head.

‘Don’t look away to hide the fact that this is what you hoped would happen. You’re not walking away from this feeling good about leading me on. I’ve got some things to say, and you will listen.’

‘Fuck off. Fuck off. Fuck offfffff!’ Spike sings that last word.

‘I will never beg any man to love me – whether we’re engaged or not. For weeks that’s what I’ve done with you and I’m over it.’ For a second I stare at the screen, his serious face nearly making me crack and ask if he even cares. But does it even matter? He’s proved he doesn’t. Continue on, Jade.

‘Consider our engagement officially over. I’ll mail back your ring.’ I pause, watching him cock his head as though he’s confused. ‘Oh, that’s right, you never bought me one.’

Laney claps her hands, proud of my sass.

‘I should have known right then too. But I was willing to look past it. Anyway, you should know I’m moving on, and if you haven’t already, which I suspect you have, you should too. Have a good life, and—’

‘Fuck off!’ Spike hollers again.

I momentarily stare at Conner’s face, but I can’t tell how he feels. He’s emotionless, and that pisses me off. Am I not worth one emotion? Before he can speak, I jab the end call button, the screen going black. I feel slightly bad, but what did he expect after how he’s treated me since he left?

‘Woo!’ Laney cheers, wiggling her fingers through the air. ‘She did it! Fuck. Off. Conner!’

‘Only one problem,’ I say, lifting my left hand and flashing her the ring I’m still wearing for reasons I don’t want to think too deeply on. ‘I like this guy.’

‘Who in the hell gave you that?’ Laney grabs my hand, taking a good look. ‘Do you have men lined up to marry you or what?’

‘Not exactly…’ I say, through a clenched-tooth grin.
