She thought about it as she turned the meat in the pan. “No. I mean not in a sense that I’m bothered by how old you are, but maybe because I feel so young now. I always thought I was a grown up but next to you I almost feel like a newborn.”

“I don’t see you as a child.”

“I know you don’t. It’s hard to explain. You’ve probably seen so much, and I barely left Houston for the first time a few weeks ago.”

“We’ll take you and let you see the world.”

“Anywhere you want to go, we’ll take you at a moment’s notice.”

She flinched and turned around to see Silas leaning against the counter. She hadn’t even known he was in the kitchen with them. He came closer and laid his arm around her waist.

“Just tell us where you want to go, and we’ll arrange it.”

Leaning into his caress she turned off the stove and set the pan aside. “How old are you?”

“Around 180.”

“Have you three always known each other?”

“No, we stumbled across each other and stuck together. Amon and I found each other first, though it took us a while to build a friendship. Silas came to us last.”

She tossed the salad and added the dressing, corn, and tomatoes before finishing it up with the chicken strips.

“I have a few more questions.”

Rayen leaned closer and kissed her hair. “Never be shy, and always ask us.”

“So, since you don’t burn in the sun, what other things about vampires are myths? What about the whole garlic, holy water, and silver thing?”

They followed her to the table and sat down. Amon joined them a moment later sitting opposite of her, next to Silas.

“Garlic is just a vegetable and holy water is just water,” Silas said.

She opened her mouth, needing more details, but Amon spoke first. “At least nowadays the kind of holy water you are speaking of doesn’t exist, at least to my knowledge. Someone calling himself a priest blessing a bowl of water doesn’t make it holy.”

“Crap, I guess I’ll have to throw away that holy water garlic mixture I’ve been hiding in my purse,” she said playfully.

Rayen and Silas chuckled. Even Amon’s mouth twitched into a smile.

“Silver is a little trickier,” Silas explained further. “It depends on the silver itself. Most silver isn’t pure enough to hurt us badly, though it stings our skin. How much of it touches our skin also matters.”

“So, the necklace you gifted me won’t hurt you?” They shook their heads. “And where do you get your blood from?”

“Blood banks.”

She giggled and said sarcastically, “Yeah, I did that too a few times. Just walked on in like it’s an open bar.”

“We have our ways.” Amon seemed to be warming up.

“Is real estate the only thing you are working on right now?”

“We have a few other companies, though they are under other names.”

“How do you hide not being able to age?”

“We stay with a business as long as we can, then we sell it and start over somewhere else.” Amon completely relaxed into his chair.

“With new identities?”
