“How often would you like us to come out here?”

“Only as often as it is needed. We would prefer no more than twice a month. We only need the already existing landscape around the house to be maintained.”

He nodded. “I understand. Would that include the trees on the edge of the property towards the main street?”

“I’m sure that wouldn’t be something that would need to be taken care of each month.”

“No, Ma’am. I can include it as a separate estimate, but I would suggest having them looked at at least twice or three times a year.”

Gwen hadn’t been to this part of the property yet and was trying to hide her curiosity. The back of the house was just as beautiful as the front. It had a large patio and a balcony above it. The windows on the second floor were large, and just like the front, uncovered by curtains. If she stepped just a little further on the lawn, she would be able to peek inside.

“Ma’am, does your employer have a certain day they prefer?”

“We are flexible, as long as we get a heads up.”

“I would have to get all my men to come to be able to get this done in one day.”

“That is fine with us.”

He nodded as they walked around the house back to the front. “I’ll have an estimate ready by the end of the day.”

He seemed eager and clearly wanted this project. It would most likely bring in a good chunk of money for him. She reached her hand out to him to shake his.

“Thank you for coming out.”

“It was my pleasure.”

She watched as he drove off before walking back inside. The next two men were just as eager to get the property and by the late afternoon she had all three estimates in her inbox. She quickly printed them out and laid them on her stack of papers for Monday. Just as she was about to sit down and read, her phone started ringing and showed the number of Evangeline’s care home.

“Hello.”

“Gwendoline, it’s just me Stacy. I hope I didn’t alarm you. I just wanted to call and see if you could provide a few things for us next time you come by.”

“Of course, what does she need?”

“Toiletries like shampoo and maybe a few hairbands.”

“Does she need clothes?”

“No, her's still fit.”

“I’ll bring everything with me tomorrow.”

“Perfect, I’ll see you tomorrow then,” Stacy said with a light tone, before hanging up the phone.

Gwen got up and retrieved her purse. She drove to the nearest Walgreens and grabbed everything Evangeline could possibly need. These kinds of trips used to scare her, and be a burden, because she always had her money problems in the back of her mind. This time, it was actually relaxing walking through the aisles and grabbing whatever she and Evangeline needed, without worrying about her bank account.

That evening, Gwen cuddled up on the couch with her dinner and a book. She was so embedded into the story that she lost track of time and went to bed around midnight.

The next morning, she took it easy, enjoyed a hot shower and had a large breakfast before heading out. She enjoyed the ride, driving with her windows down and music blasting. Of course, only after she’d left the Seavey property.

Evangeline was sitting in her wheelchair in the library where everyone was playing games. Gwen took a deep breath and walked over to Evangeline, with a heavy but happy heart. She leaned down and kissed her cheek, before turning to Marie, one of the caretakers playing cards with the others.

“Do you mind if we go outside?”

“Of course not. We’ve been stuck inside all morning. I’m sure Evangeline would love to get some fresh air before it gets too hot out.”

Gwen hooked her bag on Evangeline’s wheelchair before pushing her out onto the patio. She found a shady spot and pulled a chair closer to her.
