Davina rose from the bed, and the sheets fell. Reaching to the nightstand drawer, I grabbed a pair of boxers and a white tee for her to wear.

“Here, hurry.”

“But…” Her chest began to heave with the clothes in her hands.

“We don’t have time. Change in the closet and hold tightly to the gun.”

I could hear whispers at the bottom of the staircase before it went silent.

Davina tip-toed toward the closet, lines on her forehead and fright in her face. She stepped inside, and quickly dressed. She stared down at the gun that shook in her hand, and her horror-filled eyes brimmed with unshed tears.

“Call Viktor. Be short and quiet,” I ordered and handed her my phone. Tears spilled from her doe eyes, and I hated to see the panic and fear inside.

I kissed her, hard and deep, before my forehead met hers.

“Don’t be afraid, I’ll be back for you shortly. But, if you hear footsteps and not my voice,” I covered my hands over her shaking fingers that held my gun, “Don’t think.”

“Don’t go,” she pleaded.

“If you see death coming your way, tip the scales. Look at it right in the eye, smile, strike, and run until we meet again.” With a kiss on her head, I left her.

Davina

The darkness consumed my heart inside the closet. I was surrounded by his scent, surrounded by dread, knowing Ilias out was on his own with the monsters that wouldn’t let me escape.

How could I let him walk away?

My fingers shook, and the weight of the gun burned with awareness of what this one weapon could do. I huddled my body in the corner, dropped the gun, and swiped the screen of the phone in search of Viktor’s name. It was the last outgoing call on the phone’s log, and I pressed the green button.

Viktor answered before the first ring finished.

“Boris is safe, if that’s why you are calling.”

I choked on my cry when I heard the faint and familiar accent Viktor had.

“Where’s my brother?” Viktor asked quickly.

The house was silent, but my heart drummed loudly.

“He said to call. Someone’s inside his house.”

“Fuck!” he yelled, and I could hear him moving rapidly through the phone. “Who are you?”

“Davina.” I sniveled, not caring if I’d given him my real name. I owed it to him.

“Where are you?” Viktor asked at the same time a loud car door shut on his end.

“Inside the closet.”

“Don’t get out. I’ll be there shortly,” Viktor assured me, grunts and shuffling coming from outside of the room.

“Hurry,” I whispered before ending the call.

How many people were outside?

The air in my lungs rattled in my chest, constricting the flow with each breath I tried taking. The thought of any harm happening to Ilias while I sat in a dark corner like a rat, hiding from danger as his life was at stake made me ill. My stomach rolled, bile rose, and hives crawled over my skin.
