Facetime? Why does Gia need to Facetime her? That doesn’t make sense.

The hotel. We were at our series at Chambliss. I thought Sylvia was keeping Astria. Is it time to go?

Bits and pieces of what feels like memories flash in my mind, but they’re all fragmented and meshed together. I can’t see them clearly nor can I decipher between what is reality and what might just be a distant dream.

I definitely took a hit to my melon. I feel like I’ve been asleep for years.

“Mommy! Mommy!” I hear Astria, but I don’t see her. Why can’t I see her?

“Hey, baby! I miss you! Don’t take the cookies from Grandma, they have broccoli in them!” Broccoli, Gia is so full of it.

“Daddy!”

I’m here baby girl, Daddy’s here. But my voice won’t work. Why won’t my voice work?

The questions only make my head pound harder.

Fuck. The fight. My voice wouldn’t work. Where’s Tyler? There was so much blood.

“Daddy has a boo boo, but we’re getting him all better. I promise.” Gia’s voice sounds so calming. I could listen to her talk for hours. Maybe I’ll go back to sleep for a while longer.

Wait.

Me? I’m hurt? I don’t feel hurt. I feel tired. And I can’t see a damn thing. Why is it so dark?

“Astria.” I croak, and it works. Finally, my voice works. Damn, I sound rough. My mouth feels so dry, and I’m thirsty, so thirsty. I feel like I’ve swallowed razor blades.

“Daddy!” I hear Astria’s sweet squeal. Gia gasps. I crack my eyes open enough that I can make out her silhouette in the chair next to me.

Where am I? My eyes burn. I try to move, but can’t.

“Gia? Was that Damien? Was that Damien, Gia?” Mama Patterson. Where’s the fire? She sounds panicked. What is going on with everyone? This is the strangest dream I’ve ever had.

“Mom, I’m going to need to call you guys back. Oh my God. He’s awake. Oh my God!” Gia jumps from the chair, dropping her phone on the floor in the process, but instead of picking it up she slams her hand down repeatedly on a button on the wall. I just barely can make out a red flashing light through the burning slits of my eyes.

“He’s awake!” She screams over and over again. So much for a calming and relaxing.

Damn, my head hurts. Is the yelling necessary? I took a nap, it’s not revolutionary or anything.

“Gia?” I manage to say her name, but words are hard right now. My throat feels tight.

“Damien, you know my name? You know Astria?” She asks in disbelief, standing beside me.

That’s a ridiculous question. Why wouldn’t I know who they are?

“Yeah, did we win?” I can’t remember if we won the final game. My team needs me. Did we advance? Was the fight before or after the buzzer? The timeline is all mixed up in my head.

She doesn’t answer me immediately, instead, she lets out a laugh. It’s a loud, full-body laugh. She laughs so hard that tears stream down her face, and she piggy snorts through her nose.

I blink over and over again, trying to clear the burning sand from my eyes.

I’m still trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

“Gia? Is everything okay? You called for us?” A woman in a pair of scrubs peeks around a light blue curtain.

“He’s awake! Lyla, he’s awake!” She continues to laugh. Her laughter borders insanity, and it makes me a little anxious.

Lyla, that name sounds strangely familiar to me. It’s like I’m having de ja vu. The woman looks from Gia, who is in a fit of complete hysterics at the moment, to me, and her smile widens.
