At first, she was angry. She didn’t want help. She wanted to save herself, but the ogre persisted.

Is my imagination too much? Or is there so much more to this story than an ogre and a princess?

He took her hand in his, and she followed him in the opposite direction, to the edge of the forest nearest town.

The ogre watched the princess. He could not believe just how beautiful the princess truly was. When the princess finally saw a road that she recognized she kissed the ogre on the cheek with excitement.

The ogre was stunned. He’d never been kissed by such a beautiful princess.

He fell in love with her instantly, but the ogre knew he could never have the princess.

Love. I tug Astria’s blanket over my body. I do my best to hide from the emotions that are suddenly swarming me. It’s just a children’s story, right? This is make-believe.

He was an ogre after all. He was destined to live his life alone in the forest.

To the ogre’s surprise, the princess returned the following day.

She brought mushrooms and onions, the ogre’s favorite.

“Ewwww,” Astria yawns as she speaks, and I can tell that she’s fighting sleep.

That night instead of returning to her castle, she stayed with the ogre.

You see, the princess saw the beauty in the big ugly ogre too.

Damien’s foot brushes my calf muscle, and my eyes start to water for no reason at all.

Her magic allowed her to see his heart.

Sometimes, love grows from the messiest of situations.

There is beauty in all life.

I run my fingers through Astria’s silky hair. Her eyes are closed. She’s fast asleep, but Damien continues.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little magic to find that what you’ve been looking for has been in front of you the entire time.

I hold my breath.

And more often than not, the story that leads you there is nothing at all like you thought it would be.

You see, the princess fell in love with the big ugly ogre. The ogre loved her from the very first kiss. Together, the princess and the ogre lived together happily ever after.

Silent tears fall from my cheek. I’ve fallen in love with the ogre. But the thing is, he’s not ugly at all. He’s the kindest, most beautiful man I’ve ever known.

And the whole kingdom soon learned what the princess knew all along. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and real, true beauty lives in our hearts. We just need a little magic to find it.

My heart beats wildly in my chest as I lay still beneath my armor, Astria’s blanket, fearful that moving will break the beauty of this moment. Is it true? Or is it merely a fairytale?

I was never supposed to develop feelings for Damien. That was never part of the five-year plan. I wasn’t supposed to crave his touch or go melty at the sound of his terrible singing voice. None of this was ever supposed to happen. But, it did. And things have changed.

I owe it to myself to find out what this is between us. I owe it to Astria. I owe it to our little family and the future that I know in my heart that we can make together.

Damien breaks the trance. He rolls from the bed, lifting Astria’s small, sleepy body effortlessly to place her in her crib.

I sit up, and watch him, knowing I need to say something, but unsure of how to say it.

“Hey, Damien?” I want to come to your game this weekend. The words are on the tip of my tongue, but when he pauses to look at me, they refuse to leave my lips.
