Pulling on my wrists, I noticed that the end of one was fisted in my palm. Why? All I need to do is pull, and I’m free. My eyes searched the room again for clues until they landed on a man dressed as a soldier standing guard in the corner of the room. He’s covered from top to toe, but his eyes darted to mine, and in that instant, I knew. Alex.

Relief washed over me as my chest filled with a renewed hope I didn’t have moments ago. Holly might perch on that bed like a badass, but that doesn’t take away the fact that she’s still in chains and her sister sits in the chair to my left with an assault rifle draped across her lap.

As it stands, in this room it’s two on two. I’m not underestimating the skills of Missile or Kris despite the fact that Alex and I are both trained agents. It’s interesting the Bureau has him in the field instead of behind the computer. In all the years we’ve been doing this, Alex has only physically been in the field with us a handful of times.

There is only one reason why he would be in this room. Emily has to be here somewhere; my best guess would be that she’s handling the situation in the tunnels. If they’re moving a shipment down there, she’s able to blend easier than she would be up here.

They must have received word that the shipment was coming early. I don’t know any other reason they would already be here. Unfortunately, it looks like Holly and I were the last to know.

“Jesus, Kris, stop playing around and take what you want. We don’t have all day. I need to be at the harbor by nightfall.” Missile spoke up from her spot in the corner, hurrying her husband along and fueling my desire to accidently take her out point blank when the time comes. Sometimes accidents happen, what can I say, it’s just a hazard of the job.

I looked over to Alex again, who held up three fingers behind his back.

A third person.

It’s ok. Alex and I have been training for this day since we could walk. He might not actively work in the field, but he’s been my ride or die since we defended the universe from evil more than twenty years ago. If we can somehow free Holly, we’re still on an even playing field.

“Reid.” My head felt heavy with the aftereffects of whatever drug they used on me, but my spine stiffened in an instant at the sudden terror I heard in her voice.

Kris’ legs straddled either side of Holly as he sat his knife down on the bed beside her and unbuttoned the button of her jeans, smiling. “No one in this room is going to save you, Holly. I’ve waited for this day for so, so long. You’ve always thought you were so much better than us. I’m just a foot doctor, right? Stare at feet all day? So damn boring. You were wrong. How does that feel? You were wrong about Chet, and here you are, wrong again. Come to think of it, I miss that guy, he put you in your place, didn’t he?”

He continued to taunt her as the oxygen in my bloodstream worked overtime to fuel the adrenaline that pulsed in my veins.

Not today asshole. My eyes landed on Alex who read the fire in mine.

He knows. He understands because he’s been there too. He feels the inferno engulfing me just as sure as I do.

I’ve been in a lot of tense situations and have been able to remain calm, but fuck if I’m going to sit here and let this man touch what’s mine.

I looked back at Missile, who was momentarily distracted by the show her husband was putting on, and then back to Alex who now held up five fingers, four fingers, three fingers…countdown…two fingers, one.
