Chapter Thirty

Holly

Everything happened so fast. One minute Reid was pressing my body between his and the wall of the master bedroom, and the next minute I was running.

The muscles in my legs burned as Reid yelled at me to move faster as we flew down the grand staircase in the plantation house. Shots rang out behind us, but I didn’t dare turn around, I just kept moving. If we could just make it outside, we could get some coverage, but right now we fly through the halls of the house completely exposed.

I listened carefully for Reid’s breathing behind me, I needed to know that chaos might be erupting around us, but as long he still breathes, we’re going to make it – we have to. I should be terrified, but it’s strange, I feel empowered. The adrenaline surge is renewing the energy in my veins and pushing me harder, faster.

Until we hit the first-floor landing and I am knocked to the floor from the side, the air forced from my lungs with the impact as a familiar body uses his full force to tackle me to the ground. Duke, or I guess as Reid lovingly likes to refer to him, fucking Bennett, lands on top of me, restraining my body under his.

My eyes dart wildly around the grand foyer, looking for Reid, only seconds have passed from the moment I last heard his breath; his body lies limp next to the large double door entrance of the house. My heart seizes, and I kick out wildly, fighting my captor.

“Look at that, the youngest mafia princess. Don’t tell your sister, but I always thought you were the prettiest. I knew you would end up under me eventually. I saw you in the elevator princess, I know you like it rough.” I continued to fight his hold as his stale breath bathed my face and bile pooled in my throat.

“You don’t get to call me princess.” Looking into his eyes I spat in his face, causing him to reel back in disgust.

“What the fuck is it with you people and the spitting? Bitch.” His bare hand stung my skin as he pulled back and slammed his palm across my face. I tasted the blood as it left my mouth, but it only fueled the fire that licked my insides.

“What did you do to him?” The words burned my throat as I swallowed down blood and fought for oxygen under the weight of Bennett’s body.

“Who? Oh, your little boyfriend? Don’t fret, I didn’t kill him. I just put him to sleep for a minute. We’ll let him get a nap, and then when he wakes up, if he’s a good boy, he can enjoy the show. Now, let’s get you back upstairs where you belong.” Bennett wrapped my hair around his hand and pulled me to my feet as another man wearing a ski mask that covered most of his face, who I’m guessing is one of the soldiers Reid was telling me about, stepped into the foyer to hoist Reid over his shoulder and drag his lifeless body behind us.

I didn’t make it easy; I felt my hair being ripped from my scalp, but I fought Bennett as he continued to force my body back up to the second-floor landing and into the master bedroom.

I remained conscious as my sister, a woman that I can no longer fathom that I share blood with, clasped cold, silver metal down over my wrists, chaining me to the large bed in the center of the master bedroom and throwing the keys at the soldier, leaving me defenseless.

Bennett nodded toward Til before stepping out of the room and disappearing into the hallway.

“Where do you want him?” The unidentified soldier spoke to Kris who tilted his chin towards the wall that sat directly across the room from the bed that had now become my prison.

The rancid smell from the mattress permeated my senses and made my gut turn with nausea.

Wake up, Reid. I need you, wake up.

“Where to start? Where to start?” Til walked back and forth in front of the bed, tapping her chin in exaggeration and pacing as she thought out loud.

“You think she’s armed?” Kris spoke up as he kicked Reid’s lifeless body that sat slumped on the floor.

“Soldier, whatever your name is, get over there and frisk her for weapons. You can touch, but don’t get carried away. We have plans for her.” I tried to prepare my mind and body as the masked soldier approached the bed I was chained to.

His face was covered, but his eyes, his eyes were visible, and there was something oddly familiar about them. Some memory tugged at my brain as I watched him come closer, but I couldn’t place it.

He didn’t speak, but he didn’t hesitate to lean his large frame over mine as he began touching my body, and I waited for him to find the weapons that Reid so carefully placed on me just this morning.

He started at the top and worked his way down. He ran his hands over my arms and then slid his gloved palm under my shirt, touching my bare skin with slow, calculated movements.

A smile glinted in his eyes, but it wasn’t evil, who is this man?

Why do I know him?

And why does my heart remain calm when he comes near me? I should be freaking out, but I’m not and that’s strangely comforting given my current predicament.

His hand brushed over the gun at my waist, and he yanked, pulling it out, and throwing it behind him to Kris, who caught the firearm with ease.

His hands skimmed down my jean covered legs and over the bulge at the back of my calf, but he didn’t pause. I saw a flash in his eyes, but he left my weapon. Reaching behind me, his hand brushed my last resort.

I made Reid two promises as we prepared to leave the house today.
