“I’m sorry. Listen, let’s head back in for the night. We’ve got a lot to go over, and it’s dark now. We can head back over to the plantation house tomorrow to finish looking around and finalize planning details.” Reid spoke as I tried to re-orient myself.

“Yeah, I’m not going back in that house until daylight. Where are we?” I asked still unable to gain my exact bearings.

“We’re on the opposite side of the property, the cook’s house is back that way. It’s a little walk but at least we aren’t underground anymore.” Reid nodded his head in the opposite direction as we began our walk back under the open air of the night sky.

“The cook’s house. That’s what the boy said too.” I thought back to my conversation with the little boy when I arrived. It feels like a lifetime ago.

“The boy? What boy? You’ve spoken to someone else out here?” Reid looked back at me, his eyes clouding with worry.

“Yeah, but it was a young boy. Maybe ten or twelve years old at the most. It was a strange conversation actually, but he was here when I arrived. I thought I was meeting Laurel for a set of keys, but when I got here there was no one here, and the gate was locked. That’s when the boy arrived and handed me the key to the gate.”

“We’ll look into it. I haven’t been made aware of there being anyone else on this property. We know they are preparing for a shipment, but I’m not sure why they would have sent a little boy out here to meet you. It doesn’t make any sense.” I could see Reid working through various scenarios in his mind as he thought.

“Reid, I know you’re here to protect me, but how much danger are we in…really?” I asked hesitantly, nervous as to what his answer would be.

“Ever shot a gun?”

“Nope.”

“Thrown a grenade?”

“Can’t say that I have.”

“You’re about to learn. Welcome to level ten, princess. Shit’s about to get real.”
