“No, you’re right. Someone has been down here recently. The chain system on the walls of the tunnel is new, no rust. They’re preparing.” Chains? I tried to focus on the walls, but it was too dark.

Yanking Reid’s hand back I stopped our progress. “Who is preparing? What chains? Give me the light, Reid.”

His eyes studied me, but he didn’t give me the light. Instead, he released my hand and walked toward the hand carved tunnel walls holding up the phone to illuminate what I couldn’t initially see. The light ricocheted off of the chains of silver that hung down, slack against the walls. Chain after chain with attached wrist cuffs, they all looked brand new, hundreds of them.

Reid stood in silence as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. “What is this? Who has been here? No one was in the house, but someone has been working in these tunnels. Why?”

Reid took a deep breath before turning back to me. He walked toward me until the tips of his combat boots touched the toes of my sneakers. “Remember when I told you that things aren’t always what they seem?” His voice was serious, and my senses immediately went on high alert.

“Yes, I know you aren’t a damn claims adjuster, Reid. I might be blonde, but I’m not stupid.” I rolled my eyes, but on the inside, I was panicking. I know Reid isn’t an insurance agent, that much is obvious. But right now, I’m alone in a dark tunnel turned prison apparent with a man that is prepared to go to war, and I don’t know the battle we’re fighting.

My heart is calm because I trust Reid, but am I prepared to find out his truths?

Is he prepared to give them to me?

Once I know his secrets, there’s no turning back.

Is my heart prepared for the magnitude of those consequences?
