“Asher Cohen, nice to meet you.” Using his free hand, he reached out to shake mine, firm.

“Reid Chapman, it’s been a pleasure. We appreciate the opportunity to fulfill our obligations. Bill and Shelia have been clients of ours for years as well as friends of the family. We hope to continue this partnership for years to come.” I pasted on a fake smile and maintained my cover.

“Of course, we were satisfied with the level of service we received on the claim, especially after the disaster that was the city’s denial of liability.” Beth rolled her eyes and let out a frustrated breath, surely glad that the entire process is over.

“We do what we can. I will let you get back to the party, I just wanted to stop in and say congratulations.” I rocked back on my heels as I began to excuse myself from the conversation. I got what I came here for tonight, and if Adkins isn’t here, there isn’t a reason for me to stay any longer.

“Plans tonight?” Beth raised an eyebrow and gave me a look that had trouble written all over it.

“No, not this evening.” I answered honestly as I searched her eyes for a hint as to what she was fishing for.

“Ah, just trying to make sure Holly wasn’t lying to me.” She lifted her shoulder and shrugged, dismissing the topic.

“About?” I questioned, stepping back into the conversation, my curiosity piqued.

“Well, she ducked out early because she said she had a date tonight. I was so sure there was something between the two of you, especially after the other day in the café. So, when you excused yourself so quickly, I thought maybe she was lying about who exactly her date was with so the girls and I would stop giving her a hard time. Sorry, I guess I was wrong.” The more she spoke the stronger her accent became.

She lifted her manicured finger up to tap her chin as her eyes twinkled with something I couldn’t quite decipher, especially not as the blood in my body began roaring in my ears and the hard line of my jaw locked as my teeth ground down together.

“Ok Beth, no more champagne for you tonight. Let’s go check in on your girl over there in the corner – her face looks like bad decisions. Thanks for everything, Reid.” Asher ushered Beth over to the corner of the building where the young girl and boy were standing so close together their bodies were almost flush, but I couldn’t care. I was too busy slipping my phone from my pocket and heading back outside into the night sky to locate my vehicle.

The fuck she is going on a date after she turned down my offer for dinner, multiple times.
