“Playing for him?” she suggests, her voice all smug.

“Well, yeah. Although the way you say it makes it sound so… Dirty.”

Jade bursts out laughing, and I connect my foot with hers under the table, only it’s Grace who lets out a loudOuch.

“Sorry, that was meant forher.”

“No worries, my long legs get in the way.”

“I can’t believe you actually wanted to kick me,” Jade protests.

“I can’t believe it took her so long to do it,” Grace says instantly. “Just ignore her, Penny. She can be nosey.”

“Hey, whose side are you on?”

“Why are we picking sides?” Prescott asks, joining the conversation. Even through the chatter in the cafeteria, I can hear the chair being dragged across the floor as he takes his seat.

“Because she’s a traitor, apparently,” Jade accuses.

“I’m just telling the truth.”

“As if you’re not interested to hear what’s new now that she agreed to give him lessons.”

“What lessons? And who’s him?” This comes from Prescott. “I wanna know.”

“See?”

“That’s just because you two are the same. Now that you’re together, all you do is gossip.”

“Well, we need to live vicariously through somebody, and Penny’s our only hope.”

“If I’m your only hope, then you’ll be bored out of your mind because my life is pretty mundane.”

Jade doesn’t miss a beat. “Liar. The guy you have a crush on is here, and he asked you to play for him.You,Penny. Not somebody else.”

I don’t want her. I want you.

I could still hear that stubbornness and determination etched in Sebastian’s voice as he said those words, but that’s not the only side there was to him, was there? He could also be gentle and kind, which made the whole situation even more frustrating. The guy is giving me whiplash.

“So, how is it going?” Jade insists.

“Fine, I guess.”

“Just fine?”

Seriously, some days I feel like she’s a dog with a bone.

“Yes, fine.” I let out a sigh. “He’s so infuriating. Like how can somebody who can produce music that makes my heart ache the way he does, act like such an asshole in real life?”

“What did he do now?” Jade asks, her voice serious.

“It doesn’t even matter.” I wave her off and rub the back of my neck, where I can feel the tension growing. “It just feels like for every step forward we make, in the same breath, we take two steps back.”

“Well, I guess now’s the time for another step forward.”

My shoulders tense at her words. “Why would you say that?”

“Because he’s been standing behind you for the last five minutes, looking like a lost puppy and debating on whether he should come over or not.”
