“Fine,” I grunt, pushing into a sitting position.

I take Penelope in, looking for any sign of injury. Her hair is a mess, her face pale, eyes wide. I move lower, inspecting every inch of her body.

“You okay?” I ask, taking her hand in mine, only to find a scratch on her palm. “Fuck, you’re bleeding.”

She runs her fingers over her palm, smearing the red over her skin. “It’s just a scratch. Are you okay? You took the worst of the fall.”

She’s worried about me when her freaking hands are bleeding?

“I’m fine.” I brush her fingers away. “We should have that looked at.”

“It’s not that big of a deal. I’ll just wash it off. What happened?”

“That car was heading straight at you,” the bellboy repeats, reminding us he’s still there. “It was insane.”

“A car? Did somebody get hurt? I didn’t hear a crash…”

This was such a Penelope thing. Always worried about other people over being worried about herself.

“Nobody got hurt,” I reassure her.

Not for that person’s lack of trying, that’s for sure.

My thoughts make me pause. I think back, trying to remember what had happened, but it’s all a blur. The car was definitely running toward us, and the guy said he had changed direction just before it hit us.

Coincidence?

The message I got back in Blairwood flashes in my mind.

You are next.

Icy shivers run down my spine as an unsettling feeling spreads inside me.

Or a warning?

There was nothing about the two events that would make them seem connected. They happened on different sides of the country, for fuck’s sake! But still, I couldn’t shake this feeling of foreboding growing inside me.

“Sebastian?” Penelope’s hand cups my cheek, drawing me back to the present. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah, I’m sure. C’mon, let’s get out of here.”

I push to my feet and help Penelope do the same. While she crouches down to reassure herself Henry’s okay, I sweep the space. There are a few people walking out of the restaurant, giving us wary looks, but I ignore them, my attention going back to the guy still standing a few feet away.

Although I know that they’re okay, I’m reluctant to leave Penelope alone, but I know I need to do this. “I’ll be back in a minute. Will you be okay?”

“I… Yeah, sure.”

Nodding, I turn around and join the guy. “Hey…” the guy looks up, and I realize he can’t be older than sixteen or seventeen. I glance at his name tag. “Daniel, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Do you guys have cameras around here?”

“I…” He looks around as if he’s noticing the place for the first time. “I think so?”

“Could you make sure that the surveillance tape is sent to my assistant? I wouldn’t ask for such a thing, but given the situation, I want to make sure this was really a coincidence and not something else.”

The guy’s eyes bug out. “You think this could be intentional?”
