Well, that makes two of us.

“He’s here, Jade.”

“He?” Jade asks, and I can clearly hear the confusion in her voice. “Who’s here…”

I turn around to face her and lean closer, my voice dropping lower so only she can hear me. “Sebastian. He’s here.”

“Seba—” She stops mid-word, her hands gripping mine. “Sebastian, as inSebastian Black?” she hisses, her nails digging into my skin.

“Shh!” I chastise, my head tilting to the side as I hear people chatting nearby.

Neither of us says a word until they pass by, and the silence settles over us.

“C’mon, we’re getting out of here.” Jade grabs my hand and pulls me to my feet.

“Where are we going?”

My question finally gets to her, and Jade stops for a moment. “Are you done with your classes?”

“Yeah, I was just about to meet you.”

“Okay, let’s grab a coffee since I need caffeine, like yesterday, and you can tell me everything about how you met Se—”

I place my hand over her mouth, effectively shushing her. “Not here. Somebody could hear you.”

Was it a secret, though? I mean, nobody knew where Sebastian was, yet he didn’t seem to have a problem introducing himself to me with his real name. Not that it would have made much difference to me. Even if he gave me a fake name, I knew the sound of his voice. But, if he wanted to keep a low profile, wouldn’t he have invented something different? There was also the fact that I haven’t heard any gossip around campus, and trust me when I say campus is like one big gossip mill. If people knew Sebastian Black was enrolled here, therewouldbe talk.

Jade removes my hands. “Fine. Let’s go to Cup It Up.”

Thankfully, she doesn’t insist on talking about it as we make our way to the local coffee shop, a quick ten-minute walk from the music building. Instead, Jade tells me all about her first day of classes. After having to take a break from school last semester so she could concentrate on her chemo treatments, her excitement to be back is almost palpable.

“This semester, I have some pretty cool photography classes and projects coming up, and I can’t wait to get started on those,” Jade says as we enter the café, the soft chatter mixing with the sound of the espresso machine and the music playing in the background.

“You’re talking like you haven’t spent the summer shooting.”

“I know, but it’s so good to have a camera in my hands again.”

Nodding my agreement, we take another step and are greeted by the perky voice of our barista. Placing the order, we move to the side and wait until they call our names.

“There are a few empty tables in the back,” Jade points out as we grab our order.

“Henry, find a table.”

Coffee in hand, we slowly make our way between the tables toward the back.

“So?” Jade asks the moment we sit down, impatience clear in her voice. “Will you finally tell me what happened? And before you say we can’t talk about it here, we’re all alone, so talk. I’ll bump you under the table if somebody comes so you can stop.”

A soft chuckle escapes me, “Thanks?”

“You’re welcome. Now spill, I want to know all the details.”

Wrapping my fingers around the coffee cup, the iced mocha making my fingers chill, I recall my encounter with Sebastian.

“Well, there isn’t that much to say. I was in the music room, practicing, when I heard a squeak. At first, I thought I imagined it, but then he spoke.”

“What did he say?”

Well, hello, little bird.
