We make our way inside the restaurant. A pretty girl around our age is standing at the hostess’s table. She smiles at us, and Michael tells her that our friends are waiting for us. With a nod, she grabs two menus and leads us toward our table. Michael lets me walk in first, his fingers skimming over my back as I pass by.

“Ten bucks they comment on how long it took us to get here.”

I glance over my shoulder, the corner of my mouth curling upward. “I’m not taking a bet I’m going to lose.”

“Damn.”

Turning my attention forward, I look for the familiar red hair. I expect Grace to be smiling, but instead, there is a serious expression on her face.

My brows pull together in confusion, and that’s when I see him.

A few tables away from ours, no one other than Prescott Wentworth is sitting with an older couple, and the way he glares at me sends tingles running down my spine.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

PRESCOTT

What the hell is she doing here?

My gaze is glued to Jade as she enters the restaurant in a little black dress that hugs her every curve, causing my throat to grow tighter by the second.

She hasn’t noticed me yet, so I take my time drinking her in. The way she moves, the severe lines on her face, that little frown between her brows as she scans the space.

And then he walks in, and I know exactly what’s happening.

Jade’s on a date.

Here.

With the basketball douche.

The guy places his hand at the small of her back, and my fingers grip the fork in my hand until the metal digs into my skin.

There are guys who want me, Wentworth.Jade’s words ring in my mind as I watch her follow the hostess to her table. You don’t get to act like a jealous asshole when it suits you.

I know that dammit. I don’t need her to tell me. I see the way guys look at her. And I hate it. I hate every lingering gaze directed her way. I hate every smile she gives in their direction. They don’t know her. They don’t understand her. Not the way I do.

And I hate myself for wanting her when I have no right to do so.

She’s your best friend’s little sister.

Only there is nothing little about her now.

Nothing little about her at all.

The guy leans down and whispers something in her ear. Jade looks over her shoulder, and I can see her mouth curl and hear that soft laughter of hers. She gives her head a shake, his mouth moving as she says something before turning forward.

I suck in a breath as she continues her perusal of the restaurant, brows pulling together, and then her gaze lands on mine and locks.

We just stare at one another across the room, all the other noises falling into the background. It’s like there’s just her and me, closed off in our own bubble.

My heart thunders in my chest like I’ve been running without pause for miles. Her eyes widen in surprise, lips parting. She didn’t expect to see me here. Good. That makes the two of us.

“Prescott?”

“Huh?” Reluctantly, I shift my attention from Jade to my father, who’s scowling at me across the table.

“The least you can do since we went out of our way to visit you is listen when somebody’s talking to you!”
