I groaned. “It wasn’t final until two days ago. And you know I can’t leak that information to you. It’s all contractual.”

“This isn’t just about that,” he said. “We both know Carlton wants more than just a seat on your brother’s team. I’ve heard the same rumors about him and Perez as everyone else, but I’d expected you’d actually tell me if it were true.”

There was no anger in his voice, but I knew I’d have to tread carefully. “You know part of our whole different-teams thing is keeping this kind of stuff under wraps. I don’t expect you to tell me the day-to-day activities of Russo.”

“Normally I would agree with you, but I know you. If it were any other driver, you’d have told me. But because it’s Carlton, you haven’t said a word.”

I turned to face him. His beautiful eyes looked hurt. “I was afraid to tell you,” I said quietly.

“Why?” he asked, his gaze making me feel small.

“Promise me you won’t get mad,” I said, playing with the collar of his shirt.

“I can’t promise that.”

My mouth went dry, and I suddenly needed water, but I didn’t dare move. “He’s been friendly to me, and I thought if you knew that, it would make you angry.”

“How friendly?” Devin asked coldly.

“We’ve gone out a few times, casually, as friends.”

Devin was nodding but said nothing.

“We went out for a bite to eat in Monaco.”

“And Montreal?”

My heart quickened a moment as Devin rose from the bed and went to his luggage. He pulled out a manila envelope and dropped it down onto the bed.

“These were waiting for me at the front desk. Of course, there was no return address.”

My hands shook as I opened the envelope. Inside were photos of me and Blake dancing in Monaco and others of Blake walking me to a taxi just outside the restaurant in Montreal. All the air left my body, and I found it hard to breathe. I covered my open mouth with my hand.

“You lied to me,” Devin said, standing again. “You told me you were meeting friends.”

“How could I tell you it was Blake Carlton I was meeting? It was just dinner. We talked about his interest in the team,” I said, tears coming to my eyes. Someone had betrayed me, and I had a good idea it was Blake.

“Just tell me this was business,” Devin said, desperation in his voice.

But I couldn’t do that because it wasn’t. “It was just two friends having dinner.”

“But it’s not that, at least not for him.”

“It is for me!”

“He’s going to keep trying, Luna, and now that he’ll be around all the time, how long can you put him off?”

“Are you questioning my love for you?” I said, hurt with the accusation.

“Maybe I am,” Devin said with frustration. “Luna, you’ve never lied to me, not once. You’ve always been honest, so why did you lie about this?”

“Because I knew you would take it the wrong way.”

“Well now I’m definitely taking it the wrong way!”

I stood, too, hovering close to him but not touching him. “What would you have said if I told you in Montreal that I was having dinner with Blake?”

“I would have joined you.”
