She asked me about the Perez team, my role there, and my plans for the future. It was all so casual and probing at the same time, but I hadn’t really noticed until she pulled me away to the VIP bar. Blake was chatting with one of the football players.

“You seem sweet, and I see why Blake likes you so much,” she said, motioning to the bartender. “So we need to talk,” she said in the sincerest of voices.

The bartender set down two cocktails. “Ma’am,” he said to Helen.

“Thank you, George.” She handed one to me. “It’s the cocktail we’re famous for here in Dallas. It’s a Hit the Road, Jack. That’s the name of the cocktail, not what I’m telling you to do.”

I took a look at it before I sipped it. It looked like lemonade with a layer of red liquid on the top. I took a sip. Whiskey and lemon hit me first, then a hint of red wine. It was refreshing.

“My brother doesn’t often tell me about the women in his life,” she said. “I found out about Kaitlyn a few weeks before they got engaged. So you’re different. But he failed to mention to me that you had a boyfriend.”

I was in a serious bind here. I had no idea how to approach this, so I went with the truth. “Blake’s become a friend,” I said carefully. “I enjoy his company, and I’m excited about what he’ll bring to my team. But I love my boyfriend, and I’ve made that clear to Blake. I don’t want him to think otherwise.”

“He’s got a thick skull, so you’ll probably have to reinforce that a few times.”

Blake chose that moment to return.

“Thank you or entertaining Luna, Helen,” Blake said, winking to his sister. “But I’d like to get in some more dancing with this beautiful woman.”

“What was that all about?” I asked as he escorted me away. “You’ve already got me meeting your family.”

“That’s just my sister being her nosy self. And while you were here, I thought it would be nice to meet her.”

I glanced at my watch. “Devin and I really should be leaving.”

“Flynn is close to having his fill.”

“He has a large tank.”

“It was nice having you here,” Blake said, taking my hand into his.

“I haven’t had this much fun in a long time.” And I realized it was true.

“I’m happy you had a nice time.”

We found Devin where we’d left him. He was in mid-conversation with Chuck the bartender. Some part of me was surprised he wasn’t chatting up a few blondes.

“This Texas sun must have fried your fucking brain,” Devin said with a slight slur. “I meant soccer. We call that football in England, you idiot! No wonder this country can’t field a decent team; you’re all fucking morons!”

“Time to go,” I said, taking Devin’s arm before Chuck decided to acquaint Devin with his fist.

“Oh, you’re finally back,” Devin said, stumbling off the barstool in an effort to get to his feet.

“We are leaving now.”

“You’d better get that drunk home,” Blake said. “I don’t want him throwing up all over my place.”

I gave him a stern look for antagonizing Devin. “Thank you again, Blake, for a nice evening.”

“It was my pleasure.”

Devin waved to Blake before extending his middle finger to him.

Devin

Why had I gone to that shitty bar in the first place? I knew why Carlton had invited us. To show he’d gotten closer to Luna, but the joke was on him. Even though he’d lured her away somewhere, she’d still gone home with me.
