Taylor pouted her lips and tugged herself back at the covers. “That’s a bit disappointing. I hoped you had gotten something last night.” Then she mumbled, “but judging by the way you banged down my door this morning, I should have known.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Alina’s eyes were wide.

“Oh nothing, nothing.” It was obvious Taylor was holding something back, but Alina let the topic drop.

“Anyway,” she sat on the bed next to her friend. “He asked me out on a date.”

Taylor blurted with her hand on her chest, “Oh, thank goodness. I knew he couldn’t be that slow.”

“You know, I think I was too quick to judge him. He’s really not a bad guy.” Alina twirled some loose strands of hair on her fingers. Today she chose a simple look, dark blue distressed jeans and a graphic t-shirt.

“Wow,” Taylor raised her hands. “In just a couple of hours, Dereck not only managed to get you to agree to a date but also to admit you were wrong.” Taylor’s eyes were wide. “What a freaking miracle worker.”

Alina raised her hand to smack her friend in a friendly play, but the loud ring of her friend’s phone stopped her.

“Hi Peyton,” Taylor answered after seeing the caller ID. Peyton was another one of their friends. Though soft-spoken and withdrawn sometimes, Peyton was not to be mistaken as a pushover. Once this little firecracker was angry, she would simply explode.

“Hey, I called Alina but can’t seem to reach her,” Peyton informed.

Taylor stretched her lip. “She’s here, torturing me at this early hour.”

“Bailey called me not too long ago,” Peyton said. “She tells me that Alina and some doctor went at it at the hospital.”

Taylor placed her free hand in the air again and slowly turned to her friend. She spoke slowly. “You mean they also met at the hospital?”

Alina’s eyes grew wide, and she jumped at her friend in a desperate attempt to retrieve the phone. “Oh, do tell me more,” Taylor said as she sprinted into her bathroom and locked the door. Alina banged on it a few times, then gave up. It was futile to try to prevent Taylor from partaking in gossip. It was one of her favorite pastimes.

Alina heard a rupture of laughter right before her phone went off, signaling a message. She read it slowly.

“Just checking in to make sure you’re all right,”the message said.

Alina smiled, pausing only for a moment before she responded to the sexy doctor. Their conversation was composed of a series of emojis and abbreviations, which made Alina giggle helplessly. Dereck asked her to go to a concert with him and they agreed on the best day for them both. Alina had just finished sending a winking emoji when Taylor reemerged into the bedroom, leaving her bathroom door open to reveal the elaborate style.

“Peyton wants to know how far you’ve gotten with your exhibition pieces?” Taylor said, the phone now on speaker.

“I still have a couple of pieces more to paint,” Alina confessed. “I’ve hit a wall. Maybe I need a girls' night to get me going again.”

“Most definitely,” Peyton said. “I’ll organize the next one and let you know.” She paused. “Any day in particular.”

“I’m available any day except Friday.” Then Alina smiled. “I have a date on that day.”

Peyton didn’t sound surprised. Taylor must have given her all the details before coming out of the bathroom.

“I hope everything goes well,” Peyton said to Alina. Then she spoke to both Taylor and Alina. “I’ll organize with Bailey and get back to you.”

“Sure thing, Peyton,” the best friends said in unison and ended the call.

Taylor stared at a silent Alina for a moment before rushing off to her massive walk-in closet. “I have just the outfit for Friday.”

The artist Dereck bought the tickets for just happened to be John Legend, one of Alina’s favorite singers. The stop in New York was part of his world tour that ironically Alina couldn’t get tickets for. Dereck gained his tickets through an appreciative father of a patient who managed the arena where the concert was to be held.

Talk about ironic.

Taylor had wanted Alina to wear a mini sequin bodycon dress with a deep V-neck and drawstring closure to the sides. This overly sexy dress meant that she would not be able to wear underwear, so Alina opted out for something a little more conservative. It was still sexy, but her knee-length pencil skirt with a high slit allowed her to wear underwear. Alina paired this with a black sheer long-sleeve top that revealed her sexy push-up bra. She added cute low-heeled pumps and curled her hair into a bob to complete the outfit. Alina’s bag was small, just enough to hold all her essentials, and not large enough to be a nuisance. Her makeup was heavy, and she created a bold aspect of bright red lipstick to the black and white ensemble. It was a perfect outfit for a first date. Too bad it was being wasted.

“Where are you, Dereck?” Alina looked at her watch again while pacing the lobby of the arena. Most of the concert-goers had gone in and the opening artist was almost through. She had tried calling Dereck, but his phone was turned off. Not uncommon for a doctor at work.
