“So.” Colton sat up and stared at the floor. “Can we agree not to talk about that?”

She gulped. About what? The fact that she was basically on top of him staring at his lips? Did he notice that? Did he think she was about to kiss him? Oh no. What was she supposed to say? She didn’t actually kiss him. Did he hate the idea so much that he didn’t even want to talk about it?

She swallowed and decided to play dumb. “Talk about what?”

CHAPTER8

Colton stared at Remi. Didn’t she understand this had to be kept a secret? He shifted his position on the couch. “About the whole fake relationship thing.”

She let out a breath, like she was relieved or something. Odd. He wasn’t sure what that was about. “Oh, sure. I won’t tell anyone.”

He trusted her. That wasn’t it. He just had a lot riding on this. His father couldn’t find out that Remi knew the truth, or he’d be in so much trouble. “And I didn’t actually admit to it. So keep that in mind.”

“You basically did.”

He held up a finger. “But I didn’t. That’s important. Because if I did I would lose a hundred thousand dollars. And I don’t really feel like doing that.” He was saying too much, but at this point it didn’t matter. Remi already knew about the fake relationship. She might as well know the stakes if the truth got out.

Her mouth dropped. “What?”

“That’s what happens when you break your nondisclosure agreement.”

“Geesh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you break that.”

He raked a hand through his hair. This wasn’t working. “But I didn’t. See? You guessed it. I didn’t reveal it. And I didn’t confirm it. You’re just speculating, and I’m not saying anything. Got it?”

Remi finally nodded, her eyes holding understanding. “Right. You didn’t tell me anything. You kept your agreement.”

“Exactly.”

“But…” Remi stared down at her knees. “How are you going to date my sister if you’re already dating Liz?”

Yeah. That was a problem. He didn’t have a plan. Had no clue what he was doing, actually. Brooke was a wrench thrown into the cogs of his life. And honestly, he had no idea what he was thinking trying to get her to notice him. Maybe to fulfill an old teen fantasy? Which was enormously stupid when a hundred thousand dollars were on the line. And for some reason, he was kind of glad it was just him and Remi here tonight. He rolled his shoulders trying to get the tension to release. “I don’t know. Maybe I’m just stupid.”

Remi hesitated, as if she had something to say but wasn’t sure how to word it. Her gaze bounced around the room. “You’re…not stupid.”

“But?”

Remi shrugged. “Nothing.”

“Oh, no. You have a ‘but,’ and you’re going to tell me.”

She snickered. “You just said I have a butt.”

He held back a smile and gave her shoulder a gentle shove. “Don’t do that. Don’t deflect.”

“Are we going to watch the movie or just talk all night?” She turned an innocent expression toward the television.

She was holding something back, but he didn’t feel like pinning her to the wall to get it out of her, so he picked up the remote and clicked to start the movie back up. “Fine. Don’t tell me.”

Remi picked up the Twizzlers from the end table and tugged another piece out. “It’s just…I don’t think she sees you as a possibility,” she said quietly.

He jerked his head toward Remi and studied her features. “Why not?” He thought he was pretty good looking, even if he did say so himself. Girls liked him. Why not Brooke?

Remi fiddled with her Twizzler. “You’ve always been my…friend. She probably can’t see you as anything different.”

“Yeah, but maybe you could kind of give her a nudge in my direction.” He wiggled his eyebrows.

She rolled her eyes. “Don’t do that. You look like an eighty-year-old with a dirty mind.”
