“Thank you. That’s all I ask. You don’t need my permission or approval. I didn’t ask because I care where you were. I just asked because I care.”

“I know, Mom. It won’t happen again,” I say, feeling like a scolded teenage boy again.

Maybe I’ve got that Benjamin Button syndrome and I’m aging backward. That wouldn’t be so bad. At least I could fuck Holly without feeling like a pervert.

“You were with a woman,” my mother gasps.

“I’m not discussing where I was with you,” I warn the nosy old bird.

“It’s about time.”

“Mom,” I say in warning as I chug my beer with my back against the kitchen counter.

“Let me fix you a real breakfast. You can’t just have that garbage.”

“Did I walk through a fucking time machine? Stop treating me like an adolescent.”

“Stop acting like one.”

Shaking my head, I let out a chuckle but glare at her. “You’re a pain in my ass.”

“I’m sure Lyla and Laurel say the same about you. All part of the job. That’s how you know you’re doing it right.”

“Whatever you say.”

I’ve just taken a big swig of beer when she says, “Speaking of Lyla, how’s that friend of hers? Holly, wasn’t it?”

I nearly spray golden liquid all over the kitchen floor. Forcing myself to swallow it first, I answer her tightly. “Yes, her name is Holly. She’s fine, but we still haven’t found the thief.”

“Think he’ll go back to the scene of the crime?” she asks.

“I’ve got Hank sitting outside her town house right now, just in case,” I reply.

“No, I meant where you picked Holly up the other night.”

Holy fuck. Why didn’t I think of that? If he’s done this shit before, then he’ll probably do it again.

“It’s an idea worth chasing,” I admit. “Thanks, Mom.”

“You’re welcome. Now, go shower.” Her nose wrinkles before she adds, “I can smell the stench of sex on you from here.”

“You are so full of shit!”

She grins but doesn’t respond as I take her advice and decide to go shower, even though I’m not ready to wash away Holly’s scent from my beard.

CHAPTERTWELVE

Holly

While I love my job teaching three- and four-year-olds the alphabet and numbers with fun games they don’t know are actually educational, it was hard to stop myself from thinking about last night with Isaac.

And since I’ve been home and showered, I’ve felt warm all over, like my skin is too tight and achy, craving more of his hands and his mouth.

While he said it couldn’t happen again, he didn’t say he didn’t want it to happen.

But despite thinking it over for an hour, I can’t figure out if I should text him or what I would say…

“I brought you a present!” Brooke interrupts my deliberation when she comes home from work that night and finds me sitting on the sofa, staring at my phone.
