Arching a brow, she tries another approach. “You’ve never let anyone else you work with walk you home. What gives?”

Yeah, that’s a good question, but I quickly protest before she can make more of it. “It’s not what you think. He was amped up after killing it on stage. We went for a walk. When we ended up near the house, I came inside. End of story.”

Lizzy points out, “You’ve never let anyone else you’ve just met come close to knowing where we live. I’m thinking there’s somethin’ special about this one, don’t ya think, Lanie?”

“Oh, I think so, too,” Lanie taunts, then asks another question I don’t have the answer to, “Why did you feel the need to walk with him in the first place? Don’t musicians usually blow off steam after performances in the bedroom?”

Ryan grumbles, “Did you have to go there, Lanie? The dude is someone I went to school with.”

Shrugging, Lanie giggles. “Sorry.”

But I ignore them both as I sigh heavily. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.” Looking between my sisters, I shake my head. “Clearly, you’re delusional. There’s no point in arguing about this, so let’s get back to the movie.” Doing my best to move on, I pop another piece of popcorn into my mouth.

“Well, you didn’t see the look on your face when you came inside tonight,” Lanie points out. “I’m certain there’s more to Jax than you’re letting on.”

To Lanie, Lizzy asks, “What does Jax look like anyway? I wish I had gone with you to open mic. From the sounds of it, I missed out on something good. Will he be performing again?”

Knowing Lanie will find out soon enough, I fill her in on tonight’s events. “Joe asked him to fill in on Monday and Thursday nights at Pop’s Hops.”

“Really?” Lanie’s eyes light up. “I know he’s been trying to fill the spot since Tracy is out of town dealing with her family. Does this mean I’ll get to see you those nights if I’m working, too?”

“Probably,” I admit, not wanting to make a big deal of things. “I need to get some footage to share on social media if I want to build up his hype before the contest.”

“You still didn’t answer my question,” Lizzy insists. “What does this guy look like? Sloane looked so lost in thought when she came inside. I feel like I’m missing something.”

“Don’t you have a video of Jax?” Ryan suggests. “You know as well as I do, we’ll never watch this movie if you don’t give in to your sisters’ demands.”

Where is Raven when I need her? It’s like they’re all ganging up on me. Clearly, I’m outnumbered. But Ryan’s got a point. Quickly, I dig into my pocket and fish out my phone. After scrolling for one of his better shots, I turn my phone in the direction of Lizzy, hoping she’ll back off.

“Hot damn,” she draws out, pretending to fan herself. “If you’re not interested, do you think you can introduce me?”

Oh, hell no. I’ve gotta shut this down. “Uh, don’t you think you’re a little young for him?”

Lifting her chin, Lizzy holds my gaze and pointedly reminds me, “I’m just a little over a year younger than you. Does that meanyou’retoo young for him?”

“Liz, he’s a senior in college, and I just graduated. I’m a better fit for him in that department. Besides, I’ll be twenty-one this fall.”

Lanie waggles her brows as a wide grin spreads across her face. “Oh, so you are a good fit for him?”

Shit. I walked right into that one.

“Not the point,” I mutter as the room fills with laughter.

Normally, I’d welcome the teasing—but not when it’s directed toward me.

Waving a hand in the air, Lizzy assures me, “Oh, don’t worry, Sloane. You may not want to admit it, but I’m certain he’s your type. Heck, maybe he’ll be just what you need to get that stick out of your ass and have fun. I’ve heard musicians have a wild side to them.”

“You know I don’t date musicians. They’re too flighty. Besides, it’s not smart to crap where I eat. I’ve got too much riding on this internship to let anything get in the way. Though, fun fact… Jax is a computer engineer, who until recently, has only been a closet musician. Though if I have anything to say about it, he won’t stay hidden for long.”

“Seriously? A guy as hot as that, is a computer geek?” Lizzy practically shouts. “Maybe I need to hang out in the computer science department. Who knew?”

Ryan pipes in, “You’d be surprised who you’ll find in the various engineering departments.”

Lanie pats his face and teases her adorable boyfriend. “Oh, sweetie, it’s adorable when you’re jealous. But don’t worry, I’ve only got the hots for you.”

Rolling his eyes, he swats her hand away. “I’m not fishing for compliments, Lanie. Just pointing out facts.”

“Good, because even though I’ve only got eyes for you, it doesn’t mean Jax isn’t a good-looking guy. I’d have to be blind or dead not to notice.”
