My head snapped in his direction. I did not like where he was going with this. “You want to say that again?”

“Not like that, you dickhead. Rae’s tough. You can’t just accept what she’s offering. You have to shove your way into her life until she’s forced to admit there’s something more.” He took a swig of beer and shrugged. “It’s how I got her to come work for me.”

“So, I just storm into her life and tell her she has no choice,” I pondered.

“Well, something like that. You’ll have to find a way to do it where she doesn’t really have a way to back out of it.”

“Great,” I snorted. “Any suggestions on how I accomplish that?”

“Hey, I’m offering you advice. Do I have to do the work for you too?”

I sighed heavily, drinking my beer. “You know, the first time I got married, nothing was this difficult.”

“She also fucked around behind your back,” he pointed out.

“There is that.”

“And she got pregnant by another man.”

“I’m aware of what happened,” I bit out.

He frowned, glancing over at me. “Didn’t she move to another state to get away from you?”

“Didn’t you put cameras in Eva’s vehicle and on her when she fled to get away from you?”

He nodded slightly. “Maybe it’s best not to bring up our failures.”

Duke:Baby, my place. 7 o’clock.

Didn’t he know by now that I didn’t do what a man told me to? I shook my head had as I typed out a reply.

Rae:Maybe another time.

There, that would show him. I grinned to myself as I slid my phone into my pocket.

“What’s that look for?” Kavanaugh asked as he sat down in the break room, kicking up his feet on the table.

I walked past and shoved them off, earning me a glower. “None of your business.”

I grabbed the pot of coffee, irritated that it was empty. “Does nobody make coffee when we run out?”

He tore open some beef jerky and bit off a piece. “Maybe nobody else saw that we ran out.”

I watched as he chewed the jerky like a pig. For a man that was so well bred, he was a fucking neanderthal. “You’re disgusting.”

“Why, thank you,” he grinned. “Hey, and while you’re at it, make enough for the rest of us,” he said as I pulled out a filter.

I turned to him, glaring at him. “So, you sat down and waited for me to make the coffee?”

“Pretty much.”

“You’re so lazy.”

“Not lazy. I’m smart,” he said, tapping the side of his head. “See, I knew eventually someone would come in here, and then I wouldn’t have to make the coffee.”
