“And you think you can get my mind off things?”

“Baby, it’s dinner. If you really think I can sway you into my bed, by all means, walk away. I wouldn’t want you to feel that you don’t have the power over me you think you have.”

Her eyebrows shot up at my challenge. “There is absolutely nothing I’m afraid of. I know you don’t hold any power over me.”

“Then I’ll see you tonight.” I stepped away from her, brushing my chest against her as I left. “Oh, and if you don’t show, I’ll know why.”

I turned and walked away without another word. I had her right where I wanted her, but I was playing a dangerous game. Rae wasn’t one that could easily be steered. Everything about her was a challenge, one I was ready to accept.

I was almost completely sure that nothing would happen between us. After all, Rae would only come to prove I didn’t hold any power over her. Still, it didn’t hurt to be prepared.

“Bowie,” I barked into the phone.

“What the fuck do you want?”

“You need to get out.”

“What? Are you high?”

“I’m serious,” I growled. “Rae might be coming over for dinner tonight.”

He was so quiet on the other line that I assumed he was pissed.

“Look, I’m just asking you to leave for one night.”

Still, he didn’t say anything. Then I heard a loud snore.

“Hey!” I shouted into the phone. I heard him startle awake and then fall off the bed with a loud thump. There was a lot of scratching as he attempted to retrieve the phone.

“What?”

“It’s still me. You fell asleep on the phone.”

“Because it’s still time to sleep.”

“It is not. It’s nearly noon.”

“Yeah, which for me is still time to sleep. It’s my fucking day off.”

“And you have to get out.”

“Right,” he grumbled. “Because you might get laid. Again. Yeah, that’s a really fucking important reason.”

“It’s Rae,” I stressed. “I’m guessing nothing will happen, but I can’t risk you being there and fucking things up for me.”

“Yeah, because it’s me that would fuck things up. You get laid more than any guy I know. If you can’t bag her, it’s not on me.”

“Bag her?” I said incredulously. “Are you fucking serious?” I pulled into my drive and got out, grabbing one of the grocery bags. “And I don’t get laid more than any other guy you know. Carly is the first woman I’ve slept with in I don’t know how long.”

“Still better than my record. You could have warned me this was a small town with no fucking women.”

“There are plenty of women,” I said, shoving the door open. I stomped through the house to the kitchen. “You’d know that if you got out of bed and went out into the world.”

“Like I said, it’s my day off.” He walked into the kitchen and yawned, scratching his balls as he stumbled over to the coffee pot. “Fine, I’ll make myself scarce tonight.” He cradled the phone between his shoulder and ear as he continued to talk to me five fucking feet away. “But you have to do me a solid. Maybe find me a hot chick in leather.”

I turned and headed out the door for the rest of the groceries. “When you stop walking around the house scratching your balls, maybe you’ll find a woman that can put up with you.”

He grunted in response and I hung up the phone. I slammed the door to the truck after getting the last of the bags and headed inside. When I dropped them in the kitchen, Bowie was sleeping with his head resting in his palm as he leaned on the counter. I pulled out the fresh can of coffee and dropped it on the counter right in front of him. He jerked upright, then turned to me with a scowl.
