I didn’t want to get the police involved, but Fox’s friend Nicholas Tate had moved to town last year. He was a good guy, and we had a few beers every so often. He was on the police force, thanks to a glowing recommendation from Cash. After hearing what he did for Anna after she was attacked, I knew he was a stand-up guy I could trust.

I scrolled through my phone until I found his number. “This is Tate,” he answered.

“Hey, Nick. It’s Duke.”

“Hey, what can I do for you?”

“I was wondering if you could look for someone for me. Discreetly.”

“Uh, sure. Do you have a name?”

“Do you know Jenna that owns All Curled Up?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s her niece Carolyn. I’m not sure what last name she’s going by now. She might still be using mine.”

“Yours?” he asked as I dropped that bomb on him. It had never come up in conversation before, and this was a shitty time to bring it up.

I sighed. “Yeah, we were married for a short time.”

“And…you’re looking for her, why?”

“Because Jenna hasn’t talked to her in two years. I still had her number, but it’s disconnected.”

“Maybe she changed numbers.”

“That’s what I figured. But if you could just find out anything you can…maybe I can get her to call her aunt.” He didn’t say anything. “I swear, I’m only asking this for Jenna. She’s worried about her, even if she won’t admit it.”

“Alright, I’ll get back to you when I find something.”

“Thanks, man.”

I hung up and stared out at the darkness. Fuck, the last thing I wanted was to get wrapped up in Carolyn’s drama after all this time.

RAE

“Rae!” Fox shouted, but I kept going. The last thing I needed right now was Fox’s brand of crazy.

“Hey! Rae!”

Still, I kept walking down the hall.

“Are you ignoring me?”

I spun on my heel and faced him. He pulled up short of crashing into me. “You’re damn right I’m ignoring you. The last thing I need is you chasing me down the hallway. What is it this time? Do you need more shawarma?” He shook his head. “Or do you need me to hook you up to the new cameras you’ve installed in Anna’s dressing room?”

“She doesn’t have a dressing room,” he answered, looking at me funny. “You know she quit acting, right?”

“Yes, I know that!” I snapped, doing everything possible not to explode on him.

“Then why did you—”

“I was being facetious!”

“Oh.” His face cleared of all confusion and he grinned at me. “I see what you did there.”
