“I work here,” I said, almost snapping back at her. I wouldn’t get drawn into her petty arguments. Cash chose that moment to walk out of his office, clearly enjoying the new dynamic in the room. That bastard was listening from his door.
Carly opened her mouth, then closed it and pursed her lips. “Well, isn’t that nice.”
I rolled my eyes, turning to walk away, but Duke grabbed me by the arm. “Rae, wait. Can we talk?”
My eyes flicked from him to Carly and then Cash’s smirking face. “Actually, I’m busy.”
“I think you can spare a few minutes,” Cash grinned. “Especially after all the hard work you’ve put in recently.” Then he turned to Duke. “We’ve been in the middle of an investigation that Rae was leading. Sorry, I was monopolizing her time.”
“I don’t need you to make excuses for me,” I snapped.
Cash looked at me innocently, the bastard. “I wasn’t making excuses. I was telling Duke the truth.”
Meanwhile, Carly stood there gaping at us. As if to draw the attention back to her, she stomped her foot angrily. “Dukey, I waited for you last night.” She sashayed over to him and ran her hand up his chest. “Where were you?”
Her blatant attempt to make him look bad was so obvious. Not that it mattered. We weren’t seeing each other.
“I had some things to take care of.”
“I’ve been waiting since last night! You said you’d come over!”
I turned to him in amusement. “Yeah,Dukey. Why would you do that?”
He glared at me, clearly not happy with my teasing. “Carly, I told you this was over.”
“But you promised me dinner,” she whined.
I raised my eyebrows at him, wondering why he had ditched his dinner with her. And there were so many questions after that. If things were over with her, why was he here giving me puppy dog eyes. And why was he trying to contact me when he was still seeing her. And most importantly, why had he just kissed me if she was still hanging around?
And this was why I didn’t date mechanics.
“Look, Carly, I’m in the middle of something. We’ll talk about this later.”
“Actually, we’re all through here,” I smiled at him. “Please, don’t let me stop you.”
I turned on my heel and started walking away, gritting my teeth the whole time.
“Rae!” he shouted, but I didn’t bother to turn around.
He fucking kissed me, and he has a girlfriend. Or at the very least, a one-night stand. Either way, he had no right to put his lips on mine when he wasn’t free.
Fucking mechanics.

“Giiirl,” Zoe said, staring at Duke as he walked out the door with the blonde. “Why are you still pushing that man away?”
I looked back at him, shaking my head. “Because he’s just like the rest of them.”
“Strong, sexy, tatted, and ready to show you a good time in bed?”
“And a huge pain in the ass.”
“Mmm, I love when Red’s a pain in my ass,” she grinned.
“Eww, you need to get laid.”
She sighed, slumping on the reception desk with her chin propped in her palm. “I do. Like…all the time. I think I wore Red out. He actually runs away from me now. But I can’t help it! I had a baby. My hormones are going crazy.”
