“Fucked up,” I finished for him. “I’ll do what I can.”

“We have another problem.”

“When do we not?” I asked. He slid his phone across to me, looking away as I scanned the article. “What the hell is this?”

It was an intake photo of a hazard-looking Jack. His face was nothing like the man I knew. His hair was shorter, and frankly, he looked like a drug user. I scrolled further and found out he was being incarcerated for murder…of a police officer.

“Cash, what the hell is this?”

“I’d like to know that too. It would seem Jack is up to something outside our purview. I’m guessing Jason and Johnny know what’s going on, but they’re not including us.”

“This must have to do with Rafe.”

“And we let him go.” He sighed, leaning his head back against the booth. “I knew we shouldn’t have let him go.”

“It was a gamble either way.”

“So much is tied to him,” he said. “I really fucking hate him.”

“If it makes you feel any better, so do the rest of us.”

“Probably not as much as Jack right now,” he grumbled. “What was he thinking?”

“I’ll do some digging. Whatever the reason, this has to tie back to the syndicate.”

“Fucking great,” he muttered, rubbing his hand over his face again. “He’s turning everyone from OPS into a criminal. Asher’s team didn’t even have a chance to get started before he pulled them.”

“Well, if it helps, it looks like Johnny and Jason aren’t too thrilled with Rafe. Maybe that’ll swing in our favor.”

He nodded. “In the meantime, we have to find out what that key leads to, and anything you can find on Jack’s reappearance as a murderer.”

“And the plane,” I nodded. “So, just another day at the office.”

A smile tilted his lips, but it was strained.

“You know, there’s one more thing we should discuss.”

“Lay it on me,” he said tiredly.

“We should consider that FNG is in on whatever Rafe was doing.”

He eyed me suspiciously. “FNG is dead. We just watched his plane blow up. Hell, wewere almost blown up.”

I shook my head. “It’s something Fox said.”

“Fox,” he muttered. “More of his wild theories.”

“This one might have some promise. He was saying that he thought FNG was on Rafe’s side…that his disappearance was on purpose.”

“Why would he assume that? FNG helped us escape Rafe at the mountain compound.”

I wasn’t sure why this was bothering me so much, but something told me to keep digging. “It was his face,” I said the longer I thought about it. “When I saw him on the plane, he wasn’t trying to escape.”

“You said you only saw him for a few seconds.”

“Yeah, but if you were being held against your will and you saw friends show up, wouldn’t you try to do something about it?”

“Rae, you said it yourself, it was a matter of seconds. We don’t know who was on the plane with him or if he had a gun pointed at his head. He might not have been able to do anything.”
