“No, I researched it before we left. It’s not like this company is worth me knowing random shit about. Now, if you want to know anything about Funyuns, I can give you all the details.”

“Thanks,” I said dryly. “I don’t think I need to know anything about Funyuns.”

“Your loss,” he said right as the van pulled to a stop. We rolled slightly and then someone got out and walked around the van. I wanted to ask him what made him so sure no one would check inside, but I didn’t have time when the door slid open. I toppled forward along with Fox as we went down a ramp.

“Do you have a plan?” I hissed.

“Nope. It’ll be good.”

“When we get caught and they call the police on us?”

“Why would they call the police?”

“Because we’re not supposed to be here!”

He slapped a hand over my mouth as we slowed. I was probably being too loud, but seriously, this was a fucked up situation by anyone’s standards. We started moving again, and I stayed silent the rest of the way. My mind was calculating all the things that could go wrong. Maybe I should have listened to Rae and stayed behind. Obviously, I didn’t understand what I was getting into when I said I wanted to go with Fox.

We stopped again, but this time the lid was opened. A woman stared down at us in horror, then opened her mouth to scream, but never got the chance. Fox shot a dart at her, then jumped up and caught her before she could hit the ground.

“Are you gonna help me?” he asked, shuffling her body around.

“Help you what?”

“Get her in the bin.”

“You want me to shove her in the bin?”

“Well, why else would I have hit her with a tranq dart?”

I paused for a second, then said, “Because you’re insane!”

He held her under both arms as he continued to banter with me. “You know, everyone keeps saying that, but it’s not true. I’m not insane.”

I climbed over the edge and grabbed the woman’s feet. “Clearly, you are. Who thinks to bring a tranq gun with them to an office?”

“Uh…the smart people in the room that know their boss with kill them if they use bullets on people instead of tranq darts?”

“We should have found another way in,” I hissed.

“There wasn’t time. Besides, you said no one can get hurt. She’s clearly not hurt.”

“She’s unconscious!”

“But unharmed,” he pointed out. “If we’d gone with my original idea, I would have had to lie to Cash. This works out well all around.”

“We can’t just toss her in the bin!”

“Look,” he said, tossing her upper body over the edge. Her legs slipped from my hands as the woman slumped inside. “I’m trying to work with you here. You wanted to come along and I didn’t want to piss off Rae. I got us in, but we don’t have much time. If we’re going to get any information on this guy, we should move in the next two minutes. Unless you wanted to stay here and look after this lady. Then when she wakes up, you can let her take you down to the police station to file a complaint against you.”

That didn’t sound like a very appealing plan. “Fine, but no more tranqs on people.”

“I make no guarantees,” he said, turning and whistling as he headed for the elevator.

It was probably one of the stupidest things I’d ever done, but I followed him. It wasn’t like I was a Boy Scout. I carried a gun and was fully prepared to use it if the occasion called for it. I just hadn’t expected him to do things to put me in that situation.

We got in the elevator, but a key was needed to get to the top floor. When we stopped at the ground level, the guard standing outside turned and raised his eyebrows at us.

“Can I help you?”
