“Of course I will. Those are the important things. Wouldn’t you rather know up front so you don’t waste your time?”

Carter leans over and whispers, “I love your family.”

The rest of dinner is pretty normal for our crazy crew. Lots of oversharing, but more importantly, lots of laughs.

At the end of dinner, Jackson stands. “Gentlemen, Darian cooked for you tonight. You know what that means.” All of the men get up to clear the table. Carter looks surprised, but I see him smirk. From what I’ve gathered, men don’t do much helping in his house.

We all sit around the family room afterward, continuing the banter and laughter. Aunt Cass and Trevor tell us about their honeymoon. We get one or two PG-13 versions of their sexcapades.

Aunt Cass shakes her head. “If they don’t want people having sex on it, they shouldn’t have a trampoline in the middle of the ocean.”

I laugh. “Aunt Cass, I’m thinking the trampoline is for children to use during the day at the resort.”

“What about nights? You wouldn’t have children using it at night, so it’s fair game for the adults. Anything made to bounce is made for sex. It’s practically a law.”

Carter laughs. “Right. I believe that’s the eleventh commandment.” I think he’s actually having a good time with my family.

“Whatever. I’ve been kicked out of far worse and far better. Our new hotel had hanging ropes over the ocean. Ropes happen to be my specialty.” She winks at me.

We all laugh, except Mom and Jackson, who are barely paying attention to the rest of us. She’s sitting on his lap, with his hands all over her body, while he’s whispering in her ear. She’s giggling at everything he says. Trevor and I look at each other and shake our heads.

The evening eventually ends, and Carter and I walk out to our cars together. He turns to me. “I hope you realize how lucky you are. Your family is amazing. I’ve honestly never seen a family so close with each other.”

“I know. I’m very lucky. There’s a lot of love in that room.”

He smiles. “I’ll admit it though, it’s weird seeing the famous businessman Jackson Knight totally whipped the way he is. Your mom has him wrapped around her little finger.”

“He has her wrapped too. They’re definitely very much in love. Just be happy you’re not staying over. They also haveveryloud sex. Every. Single. Night. And in the morning. And during the day.”

He laughs. “Was your mom like that with your father as well?”

“They had a great marriage. The PDA wasn’t quite as excessive, but they definitely had a lot of loud sex. She’s a screamer. The three of us have vivid memories of covering our ears growing up.”

He laughs again. “Is it genetic?”

I smile. “You’ll never know.”

He nods. He’s quiet for a moment. “I think they believe us.”

“Aunt Cass doesn’t, but the rest seem to be ignorant for the time being.”

“So, Carter and Reagan are officially a thing?”

I smirk. “We sound like the 1980 presidential election.”

He laughs. “I guess we do.”

“I don’t know, Carter. I hate lying, especially to my family. It’s not really who I am.”

“I understand. I’m just trying to help us both get what we want.”

“I get it.” I think for a minute. “Can I meet your parents?”

He shakes his head. “I know it’s part of this, but I want to limit your time around my father. Jackson and I may have joked inside, but he’s genuinely a terrible person. I want to keep your exposure to him to a bare minimum. It’s simply for your own well-being, I promise.”

“I appreciate that, but being around him and selling him on us is the biggest part of this charade. It needs to happen. I want to meet him and feel this out. His reaction to us is everything. I need to see it with my own eyes.”

He sighs. “You’re right. I’ll arrange it for this week. I’ll be in touch?”
