I walked through the compound in my pajamas as I rubbed my eyes free of the sleepy gunk I always seemed to get. Daddy hadn't been in bed this morning, and I woke up desperate for cuddles.

Hunting for him through the house was hard, but I'd left the bedroom before grabbing my phone. A manual search would have to do since I was too stubborn to turn around.

As I neared the kitchen, I heard a cry that sounded oddly like a baby. Couldn't be.

Moving more quickly, I rushed the rest of the way until I was crashing into the kitchen. Daddy stood near the stove, his gaze on the little bundle in his arms. A pink blanket was wrapped around the most doll-like creature I'd ever seen.

"Daddy?" I whispered, unsure if I was dreaming or not.

He looked over at me knowingly, like he'd been waiting for me to find him. "Hey, baby. I'm glad you finally woke up."

"What's going on here? Who is this?" I slowly reached up to run my hand along the tiny baby fist wiggling about as the angel baby built up another cry. A second later, she released a blood-curdling scream that sent a smile across my face.

Set of pipes on this one.

"This is Melody. She's going to stay with us for the next couple of days. And... if you like her and decide a baby is what you truly want, then she's ours."

"Just like that?"

He gave me a grin. "Just like that. I managed to sneak in all the paperwork with some files you were signing a few weeks ago. Since then, I've been on call for a foster placement. When they rang this morning to tell me Melody was coming, I couldn't say no."

"But how? Don't they have to do home visits and stuff?" I couldn't fathom them just handing a baby over. It seemed too good to be true.

Daddy nodded as he pulled a bottle from some contraption on the counter. He did a squirt on his arm, then held it to Melody's lips once he determined it was ok to drink.

"Your work at the center was enough proof of your character. And as far as the home visit goes, I had them come out the night we went to dinner last week. Emmy gave them the tour and used a bit of her Southern charm to seal the deal." He raised his brow at me in a you know what I meangesture.

"So, she's ours?"

Daddy stepped forward, then eased Melody into my arms. I held her tightly to me as a sense of completion swept through me. She was ours. There was no question about it.

"She's ours if you say so, baby."

"I say so," I said right away.

And just like that, our life changed all over again.
