“Oh, God, what happened?” her voice trembled. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, baby, but, Cass, it’s your father.” I paused, no clue how to go on but to say the awful truth. “He’s been taken.”

“Taken?” she echoed.

“Kidnapped,” I explained.

“Dad?” Disbelief laced her voice. “Why would anyone do that?”

“We’re still trying to figure that out. We think it has something to do with a surgery they need performed.”

“Who’sthey?”

I sighed, “I’m not sure.”

“Can we get him back?”

“The Dragons are out trying to find him right now. They’ve got us, Cass. They’re in this with us, no matter what happens.”

“They’re helping us because of Talon, aren’t they? Because of what you did.”

“Yeah, babe. They are.”

“I want to come home,” she said.

“Brick’s there to keep you safe. You might meet some of the other guys. Not sure how they’re working that out, but you do whatever Brick tells you to. Yeah?”

“He said I need to go to class.”

“Then you need to go to class.”

“They’re gonna find him?”

“They’re trying, baby. But you know I’ve got you. Always have, always will.”

“I know,” Cassie whispered.

“We’re going to be okay,”

“I still want to come home,” Cassie argued.

“Weekend, baby. So far, nobody knows who we are, and we want to keep it that way. So stick to your schedule. Classes, gym, lab, whatever. Home Friday night for pizza. And if your dad’s back, he can come over too, and we’ll celebrate. Sound good?”

“Sounds good,” she sniffed. My girl was tough, but she had a big heart. “Love you, Mom.”

“I love you too, baby girl,” I said before ending the call.

I passed Ryder his phone and hung my head, staring at my shoes. And suddenly the new Brooks runners I’d been so psyched about the week before didn’t seem like such a big deal.

Ryder took my hand in his and squeezed.

“Did I just lie to my girl?” I asked, looking up and squeezing back.

“No, sweet, you didn’t,” he said, pulling me into a hug.

His arms felt good. Secure. Safe. I let that feeling roll through me, enjoying the moment that I had it.

“We’ve got you,” he went on. “Brothers know now what you did for Talon. That shit runs deep. They won’t forget.”
