“That’s my marker.”

Now, she had Gate’s undivided attention.

“From who?”

“Talon.”

Gate picked up the silver and realized it was the slug of a 9 mm bullet. She’d made a necklace out of the bullet she’d pulled out of his brother.

“You’re the one who saved him,” Gate said, his voice quiet.

“Yeah. And I’d never ask for this. I know it goes against what you guys stand for. But my job kind of depends on it.”

“One question,” Gate said, studying the silver casing.

“Okay,” Jenna agreed, eyes eager.

“Why didn’t you take this straight to Talon? Coulda saved yourself some time and effort.”

Jenna’s expression shuttered, and she looked down at her hands, the blush in her cheeks deepening to full on embarrassment.

Gate was riveted.

“We recently, ummmm, well, ran into each other. It didn’t exactly go well,” Jenna admitted.

“What happened?” Gate’s voice was even softer.

“He didn’t….”

Jenna paused so long Gate didn’t think she was going to finish.

Then she took a deep breath and looked up, blinking hard to hold back the tears, and whispered, “He didn’t remember me.”

“But you remembered him,” Gate said.

“Of course, I did.”

Of course, she did.

“You’re not empty pussy,” Gate muttered.

Jenna’s brows rose, “Excuse me?”

“He had a shot at beauty,” Gate continued over her.

“I’m not sure….” Jenna tried again.

Gate rubbed a hand across his forehead. “Fuck.”

Jenna snapped her mouth shut.

Gate pushed the necklace back across his desk. “Here’s what we’re gonna do.”

“Okay,” Jenna said.

“You’re gonna keep this marker,” Gate started.

“But….”
