She breathed a sigh and rolled her shoulders.

That’s when he knew he had her.

“Okay, I’ll get that too.”

Ryder let her go, and she turned to face him.

Andholy fuckdid she have a face.

Ryder checked a blonde mane, gray eyes, and this close he could see freckles scattered across her nose.

She took him in top to toe. “M.C.,” she observed, noting the cut.

She grabbed her bag from the counter and moved through the kitchen, throwing in more shit that looked random to Ryder, but he assumed she knew what she was doing. “Gunshot wound?” she asked.

“More than one,” he answered.

“Then we best hurry,” she said, hauling her bag toward the front door. She stopped when she saw it and frowned at him over her shoulder. “You’re fixing my front door.”

He couldn’t stop the grin he shot at his boots, but on the way out, he propped the door back in place. “You got it.”

“And you’re replacing any of my shit that gets stolen,” she huffed, marching toward his truck.

Settled in his truck, she buckled up, and he tore out of the neighborhood.

“How’d you find me anyway?” she asked.

“Google maps. You were closest,” he said, cutting through an intersection on red.

She grabbed the door handle and held on, “Holy shit, you’re gonna get me killed.”

Ryder cut his eyes her way, “For an uptown doctor, you got this locked tight,”

She shrugged and watched houses fly by, “Got my start in the service. Afghanistan. Wherever you’re taking me, I promise I’ve operated in worse.”

Ryder let that settle in his gut. He also let settle the fact that he was doing the same thing to Sarah Miller that Spider had done to Sweet’s ex.

“I need to call in,” she said.

“Can’t let you do that,” he said.

“I’ve got patients scheduled,” she argued.

Ryder mulled that and then, “We’ll let Gate decide when we get there.”

“You gonna let me go when I’m done?” she asked, her voice quieter than before.

And Ryder couldn’t stand the thought that she might be afraid of him.

“Gonna let you go when he’s okay. My word on it,” he said.

He felt her studying him and glanced her way.

“What’s your name?” she asked when she caught his look.

“Ryder,” he said.

She nodded, “Cool name.”
