Chapel the night before, decisions had been made. Heavy decisions with the weight of the world on Gate’s shoulders because if this went sideways, he stood to lose a hell of a lot more than just his club.

Ryder was almost to his table when it happened.

Talon made the great room with Jenna tucked under his arm, and in half a second, her eyes had clocked Ryder’s, and the brother stopped dead.

Without a word, she slid away from Talon and crossed the floor, heading straight for him.

He watched her walk and then opened his arms.

She stepped into them, and he folded her up, wrapping her close.

Gate’s eyes cut to Talon in time to see him grab the back of a chair in a vise grip while he watched his girl get wrapped up by another brother. But he didn’t say a word. Just let her do what she had to do.

And that’s when Gate noticed the necklace that hung around his brother’s neck. Bullet on a silver chain.

Gate barely heard Jenna’s whispered, “Thank you.”

And when Ryder put his mouth to her ear, Gate didn’t hear a sound, but the sob she choked told him that whatever Ryde’s words were, they made clear what he meant to say.

She nodded her head against his shoulder, and then he let her go.

And Gate watched Ryder while he watched the woman who had almost been his walk back to her man.

Talon checked the look on her face and then planted her face in his chest, holding the woman he’d almost lost to a man who’d realized what he had before he did.

The two men stared for a beat, and then life went on, Ryder finding his place at Gate’s table and Talon making sure his woman got breakfast.

When Ryder dropped his ass in a chair, Gate spoke low and he spoke fast. “Just being honest, I feel like part of that scene was my fault.”

Ryder started to speak, but Gate kept talking. “But that was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen a brother do. You had T’s back in a way nobody else could. And for that, you’ve got my gratitude.”

Ryder held his silence but lifted his chin in acknowledgement.

Gate had coffee to lips when his phone rang. He put the mug down, pulled the phone from his pocket, and a bad feeling slid through his gut when he saw Brick’s number.

“Yeah?” he answered.

“Tex’s hit,” Brick started. “They got the girl. Get a doctor to the compound.Now.”

Gate dropped the phone to the table and stood as he roared, “Shut theFUCK UP!”

He had silence before his next breath.

“Tex’s hit. Brick’s bringing him in. We need a doctor ASAP. Surgeon if we can find one. I don’t care how you get him here.”

“Gate?” Talon spoke from across the room, that one word all he needed to say.

“She’s gone,” Gate answered, and Jenna’s scream tore out his heart.

Chapter Twenty-One

He’ll Murder You in Your Sleep

Tex

Waiting for Cassie to get ready hadn’t been the chore Tex expected it to be. She had a style a little more hippie than her mom, but she didn’t go all out with the girly shit, which Tex wouldn’t have minded because he liked women who looked likewomen. But he appreciated the efficiency, and an hour before her first class, they were on the sidewalk heading into the cafeteria for breakfast.

“I could have carried my backpack,” Cassie said, keeping step beside him. She shot him a look, “It doesn’t really match the biker vibe you’re throwing off.”
