He saw their speculation…. and their superiority.

And it gutted him that they sneered at his girl, partially because of her choices, but mostly because of what he’d shared of himself over the years.

Since theevent, as he’d come to think of it, Anna hadn’t been around much. These girls didn’t know her. Didn’t know how things had been between the two of them.

He threw a chin lift at Talon who read between the lines and diverted attention with, “Back at whatever you were doing!”

The spell was broken once the brothers moved, and Gate kept an arm around Anna as he led her toward the front doors.

They met open air, but Gate didn’t drop his hold. “My bike or your car?” he asked, giving Anna the option, even though he’d promised himself that the next time they went anywhere, they’d be on his bike.

At Anna’s puzzled glance, Gate explained, “Less chance for you to get away if we go together.”

“My car,” Anna sighed, pulling the keys from her pocket and handing them over.

Gate grinned and moved around the car with Anna to get her settled inside. It was a play he hadn’t bothered making when they were younger, but now he couldn’t seem to stop touching her, almost as if he feared she’d disappear into thin air and he’d discover this second chance with her was only a dream.

She doesn’t know you know,he reminded himself, sliding behind the wheel of her SUV.

He turned over the ignition, and his first instinct was to reach for her hand like he had a thousand times before. But he gripped the wheel instead, forcing his attention to traffic and not the way her breasts rose and fell with her breath.

It was a tough battle.

For her part, she stared out the window, face angled away from him.

“We could have gone back up to your office,” her voice broke the silence.

“Not really conducive to what I’ve got in mind,” Gate replied.

Her face whipped toward his. “What do you have in mind?” she asked, eyes wide.

“Conversation,” Gate chuckled. “I just wanna talk.”

“You have a room there, don’t you?” Anna asked. “Or a suite, or something?”

“I’m gonna gut that motherfucker and start over,” Gate mumbled.

Anna chuckled, “Why? Can’t imagine that’s in the club budget.”

“Won’t mind paying that bill myself.”

“I still don’t get it,” Anna went on, shaking her head.

Gate didn’t figure she’d understand the lengths to which he’d go to erase his past but was

saved from further explanation by angling the SUV into Anna’s drive.

She was out of the passenger’s side before he could walk around, so he met her at the front

door, made quick work of the lock, and then ushered her inside.

Anna flipped switches as she made her way to the kitchen, lamps flaring to life as she went.

Gate followed and settled at the breakfast bar, thankful that the high back was sturdy enough to handle his weight.

Anna kicked off her heels, and Gate couldn’t help but glance at her toes.

Candy apple red.
